I'm wrestling with a theory that Gutho, Val and Cook achieved big $ NRL status from playing off class teammates, well coached structures and a fast and cohesive spines that delivered them the platform to showcase their talents.
Without which, at an outfit like the Dragons bereft of such attributes, we're not seeing anything like the form these guys showcased ... instead who are looking pretty ordinary.

Your theory definitely works for Cookie. Made his name by exploiting space created from quick play-the-balls of the Burgess brothers. Unless you've got three Burgesses in your team Cook is just run of the mill. Not sure your theory holds for the other two though. Gutho was like the energizer bunny of fullbacks, but his batteries have finally run out. Holmes was prodigiously talented, I think he's just older and less motivated now.

Spot on Johno, Val is talented but is in retirement mode. Gutho game is effort, Cook relied on speed and effort off the back off quality front rowers, both Cook and Gutho need to retire. Honorable mention that are useless and need to be let go Tu, Toupaloto sorry spelling, Laurie, Kerr, Fale, Guler, Sloane.
I do believe Luciano is a keeper but only as a front rower as his defence is suspect on the edge. Suli would be a great impact in the back row off the bench.

I was in disbelief and happy to see that Hamish Stewart was the only player to chase a bomb we put up in the second half on their line.

Luc and Su'a had a dig and Liddle should have stayed on.

How good were they without Kyle in the team . LKT WAS SENSATIONAL LOL . On a much more serious note we missed his defense in the middle massively . Cook is cooked . It's a worry throwing Reed to the wolves but no choice now . Sloan to fullback , Reed to 7 , Attikinson to 6 , Tu or Lawson and Peckam Harris on the wings ( he might be small but he's fast , extremely smart and defends like he's a foot taller ) Holmes and Suli in the centers with NT on the bench can cover center ( if Sloan is having a shocker could move Holmes to fullback NT to center) or in the forwards if needed there and he's a good defender . Liddle and Kyle 9 and 14 . Toby and Guler/ Sua and Halangahue / Stewart to start . Bench rotation KF , NT , LPT, Leilua , Sele , Kerr or Lawrie take your pick on those two lol FMD . As soon as Ryan is back move NT to Kerr and Lawrie's spot with them being left right out until unfortunately needed thru injury and when Egan comes back replace Leilua with him and Leilua pushes Sele out to once again cover injuries . I think this is our best team with what we have .

Watching this game makes you wonder WTF did they do all pre-season? They played like they were strangers thrown on the park with no training sessions at all.

I feel for the youngsters like Couchman and Stewart to get booed off today as these 2 definitely do not deserve this. They are the only shining lights in this rabble. This just goes to show that the youth are the way to go as they play with much more heart. They may make errors but at least they can make up for it in the future with a solid performance. The old guys never look like they will ever have another good performance. The look like they are playing for a pay day. Just turn up and do the bare minimum to get their pay. Stat fillers. On Stats they look good with all these tackles and run meters in a loss which is becoming every game now.
