Round 6 versus Bulldogs

Where was the issue in the other 4 rounds?

His defence has been great this year.

He’s still learning. .

Exactly. One thing I've learnt in rugby league. Things are never as good or as bad as they first seem in a game of footy. Penrith's completion rate was 67% and we had 16 errors. It was a poor night for the WHOLE team.

Leota was perhaps the one shining light in the forwards.

If someone had said to me we would drop one game in the first 6. I would take it with both hands.

Shortish turn around after a big game against the Storm. Next week is important up in Darwin. It won't be easy.

Martin looks to be out for a while, and Henry hopefully returns via cup this weekend.

Ivan said it well last night in the presser. Some got ahead of themselves.

Re Blaize, obviously that defence was shocking. If im trying to find a silver lining or positive its that for most of those breaks through him he was in position to make a tackle, preston just brushed through him, so it was mostly a contact issue, he has to slow him down at least so the help can get there. Blaize is willing and physical so it can be fixed, id be more worried if it was just 3 or 4 shocking reads with clean breaks.

Martin out might be a good thing. He's probably better suited to coming off the bench when he gets back anyway.

I adore Liam. But I honestly believe he may not get an extension beyond 2027. Love him to pieces, but he plays the game hard and tough injuries are starting to take their toll. Let him see out this contract and we might have to sadly let him go.

I agree with you Alice. Love the bloke but being an absolute psychopath on the field has caught up with him I think. I wouldn't be upset if he got a bag elsewhere for his final contract.

This is pretty spot on. Getting run over like that had is what had me so wound up during the game. It looked like a child trying to tackle. Shame it's not garner defending there as he's probably the better defender to help him out a little with Garner having better lateral movement to slide in defence.

I think Paps one weakness(for lack of a better term) is his lateral movement. He is quite quick for a forward moving in a straight line but side to side he looks a bit slower.

One of the reasons I think he's a better middle but with what we have right now we probably need him in the backrow

To expand on it you put Papali'i on the right with Nathan who's a stronger defender and Garner on the left to help Talagi. Martin is injured so easy done and when Martin is fit you play him off the bench.

Yeah dont mind that, Garner being taller and a bit lanky for a forward can cover Blaize better probably, longer reach and covers that gap in one big step and is more mobile overall.

EDIT Paps kindve makes up for his sideways movement slowness by having great linespeed, he does disrupt a lot that is run at blaize by getting up quick and making early contact, but on a big spread off a fast PTB they catch us on our heals and he struggles to cover the ground.

Send in Ivan, looked chest to chest to me
King turns his shoulder and contacts Casey on the upper chest, causing a whiplash. This is a 105kg prop running at full charge, what's a centre supposed to do? Papalii has contacted him simultaneously lower down as well and shifted the point of contact.

Second rowers running at halves is every teams weakness.

That’s kinda why they run that line.

we shouldn’t be letting him get isolated, it was more evident tonight because we didn’t control the middle, which left the edge exposed. That’s what we usually do to teams.

Make as many clips as you like, it won’t change anything, if we get rolled through the middle like that.

Whilst I agree some halves are top shelf defenders like Dylan Brown and are not a weak link. Majority are serviceable defenders and then a few have issues and a lot of time they either go to fullback or if dont fix it they end up in England.
Right now Blaize is in the HAS ISSUES category I would say. There are misses and there are misses. That late miss when down by 6 and in the game was school boy stuff. Just stuck his arm out. He has had the equivalent of 2 full seasons now. Deff improvement but still needs a lot of work. He could cost you a title.
Physically I reckon he needs another 5kgs of muscle. That will come with age.

His defence was awful for the first couple of years.

Mitchel Moses was diabolical in defense untill he come to the Eels. It still took 18mths. So he was about 25yrs old before he become an elite defending half.
The point is he didnt go from terrible to average. He went from terrible to elite.

The half isn't supposed to be able to tackle the second rower 1 on 1, especially when they receive the ball late at the line. He wasn't good but half the breaks went wider than him, it's a structural team issue that's been there all season only we've been too good at everything else for it to be exposed. It might be as bad on the other side too but we've not been given a good test there yet.

Luai and cleary are both great defenders.

You can beat your bottom dollar that luai wouldn't miss one tackle on preston let alone blaizes effort.

His efforts last night were extremley poor.. you can blame structures and inside players but at the end of the day he was shown up.

Nathan misses tackles like that quite often
