TOYOTA CUP DOMINATE COWBOYS IN TOWNSVILLE

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have tonight defeated the Cowboys 48-16 at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville.

The Dragons scored nine tries to the Cowboys three and dominated the match from start to finish.

It took nine minutes before the first points were scored with the Dragons going over in the south-eastern corner. It came off the back of a penalty that halfback Beau Henry earned catching Cowboys prop Ronnie Alovili offside. Starting the set on the Cowboys 30m line gave the young Dragons a good attacking set opportunity and they didn’t disappoint shifting the ball through the hands and it ending up with winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa who went over to score centimetres from the touch line. Henry couldn’t convert from out wide with the Dragons out to an early 4-nil lead.

The Dragons second try came just four minutes later through right centre Dean Whare. It was a short side option taken by hooker Mitch Rein who got the ball on the outside to Fai-Fai Loa who put a grubber through as he met the defence and a flying Henry Raiwalui picked the ball up and when he came to the fullback he passed it on to Whare who went over in the right hand corner. Henry was unable to convert leaving the score at 8-nil.

Back to back tries extended the Dragons lead in the 24th and 27th minutes. The first was a smart last tackle option from Henry who decided to run it on the last play and when he went through the gap he found centre Kane Linnett on his outside who ran away to score the try. Henry converted to extend the lead out to 14-nil.

The second of those tries came from the kick off and it was two offloads that kept the Dragons rolling. The first was through Trent Merrin and the second through Jake Marketo that sent Rein into open space who then got the ball to Raiwalui who went over to score under the uprights. Henry converted with the score at 20-nil.

The Cowboys registered their first points in the 30th minute through winger Chippie Korostchuk. Off the back of a penalty the Cowboys worked it into an attacking position and on the last tackle a grubber into the corner gave Korostchuk a free chance to score after he was left unmarked. Back rower Troyden Watene couldn’t convert with the score left at 20-4.

Three minutes before half-time Henry went over for a try of his own. He split the defence and went straight through basically untouched to score a great solo try. He smartly converted from the sideline and the Dragons went to the break leading 26-4.

The Cowboys started the second half in good fashion going over just three minutes after the restart. A mistake from Raiwalui gave the Cowboys a full set inside the Dragons thirty and on the last a chip into the corner and centre Moses Pangai scored. Watene converted closing the gap to 26-10.

Halfback Beau Henry continued his good game going over for his second try of the night. In an identical play to his first try Henry split through and the only change on this occasion was that he shrugged off the fullback and went over in the left hand corner. He was unable to convert with the score now 30-10 after 51 minutes.

If it wasn’t already sealed it had been now when Alex McKinnon went over for his first try of the season in the 60th minute. It was a last tackle option and the Dragons decided to run it and when McKinnon got the ball he stepped off his right foot and went over to score. Henry converted and the lead was extended out to 36-10.

A Cowboys try in the 73rd minute closed the gap but the Dragons hit straight back through Captain Jake Marketo. A break was made down the right by Sam Campbell and on the next play the Cowboys were reeling in defence and Marketo crashed over to score. Henry converted and the Dragons were now in front 42-16.

Hooker Mitch Rein continued his excellent form finishing the match with a try in the final minutes. It was a dart from dummy-half that saw him split the markers and go over in the corner. Henry again converted and the Dragons had comprehensively defeated the Cowboys 48-16.
