Big difference with AFL expansion to Sydney and Brisbane is the AFL did not call for bids to expand (stand to be corrected) and said by the way you must take a certain club that plays in the second division for your pathways. NRL called for bids, none stacked up apart from PNG due to Albo throwing money at it (no Aust taxpayer money, no PNG team) and by the way, WA must include the Bears. Apart from that the similarity of expansion between the 2 codes is uncanny, it's as if both are using the same expansion manual.

This is correct. What we have here are some dimwits who can’t see the difference. The vfl needed to get rid of existing clubs and relocated them. That’s not what we are doing by any measure. The AFL places expansion clubs in areas earmarked for growth and expansion of their brand. Their expansion locations are pre-planned. Our approach is haphazard at best. The Perth debacle is a clear case of a mismanaged approach.

40 years later who knows? The VFL didn’t want them so they had to go somewhere.

Its not quite that simple. The clubs board and players wanted to go to Sydney. A segment of the supporters didnt, but not enough to keep them in Melbourne. This was 15 years before the league decided to start pushing mergers and relocations.

In 1981, news broke that South Melbourne were considering a partial move to Sydney for 11 games a season. South proposed that they would play all their home games in Sydney, and all their away games at VFL Park. South further proposed that all matches would be night matches and effectively gave South Melbourne 22 home matches.

The Sydney move was put forward as a means to preserve the clubs identity. A letter was reportedly sent to all members advising of the benefits of the move, including increased sponsorship and exposure. The members were advised that failure to approve the deal meant possible liquidation. At this stage media reports that the players and staff were unanimously behind the move.

When told of the proposals, VFL presidents were supportive of the move to Sydney, but not overly receptive to losing a home game a season to play at VFL Park, while no one wanted to play under lights for premiership points at that time in the league’s history.

Wookie aside he’s filling in the gaps but seeing all the usual dopes fapping over afl expansion is to be expected

Forcing the Brisbane bears to lose their identity for a failed melb club is awful

Perth has no identity to lose this time when it comes to nrl its a clean slate

And neither the south Melbourne team or Fitzroy has a pokie den to support the new club as it moves into a new market

The Bears werent forced to lose their identity, they gleefully ran to take the Lions on. The CEO was positively gloating about it on the footy show when it was announced.

The Lions being absolutely railroaded by the League was the travesty.

This is one of the truer statements youve made, but saddling it with the Bears isnt ideal IMO

Fitzroy actually did have a pub associated with it, but it was held by the directors of the club rather than the club itself. Brisbane on the other hand have a shiny pokies facility at Springfield.

Pokie dens/leagues club type operations not a thing in perth either.

My point is the bears have value beyond just their history which neither the south Melb club or Fitzroy had

I’m pretty sure most of the rugby league fans commenting on this comparison don’t even remember the history of the Gold Coast bears

End of the day, the AFL and NRL have different methods of expansion. The NRL has had a while between drinks, and even the AFL might do things differently 12 years down the track from GWS.

Same goes for how they are funded - both organisations fund things differently - but I wouldnt say either of them are wrong.

Youve got to do what works best for you. Cant look a gift PNG horse in the mouth, any more than the AFL can overlook Tasmania. IF theres a Tassie style offer for the WA NRL side, theyd be mad not to take it.
