Round 9 Vs Broncos

Just for some perspective:

2017 Round 9 - 2 wins/7 losses (Finished 7th)

2019 was the same (2 wins/7 losses) and we finished 1 win outside the 8.

Putting a line through at round 9 on a much better team than the two squads above is premature.

95% of the squad having September off will be great really

Its a positive but they'll be playing international football anyway.

Still not a team in this comp I actually fear. Get a coupla wins in the bag, a bit of confidence, and we'll walk this comp home. Lock it in.

Agree, Storm who were morals look horrible to be fair, Dogs have played rubbish out of form teams, Broncos look like either top 4 or bottom 4 depending on the night. In form teams are Canberra and Warriors lol..

Just look at the Top 8 currently. We just put together some games and we could smoke most of these teams. Its just getting our shit together! On paper, we are still a GF day team, like the Storm. But paper doesnt always win the games, if we can get a month or two without 2-3 players in and out the team, we'll kick on.

It's true. Who on earth is good this year?

The Storm played 40 minutes of good football against a terrible Eels side. The Broncos put in a very good 40 last week as well.

Has any team played 80 minutes this year and put the competition on notice? It looks like the softest comp in years.

The only really bad decision that Ivan and the club has made is keeping Tago over Critter
Cant be too harsh on him on that one really. At the time it was made it certainly didn't look like a bad way to go. Crittas management played a part as well, with 11th hour shenanigans. Also if we kept Critta we may have lost someone else along with Tago.

I think the bad decision was not going harder to keep Api, a one two punch of Api and Kenny would be very handy about now. Api is still on a pretty economical contract for what he brings at the Tigers. Kiks over Martin would also be one worth debate. Martin when he is on wins out imo, but Kiks is more reliable in bringing what he offers most weeks to at least some extent, plus no Origin commitments.

The biggest thing that has hurt is the lower grades being pillaged, not much management could have done there. The path to NRL was pretty well jammed up by players still under contract that no one in their right mind would have shopped at the time.

Yeah...but you ARE bringing up the rear of this softest comp ...you've lost the heart of your team in Jarome and Fish plus what's gone unnoticed is you had perfected the momentum buiding...6 again "tunnel ball" ( IY the best at it) ...now that it's being policed and penalized it's stopped the formerly unstoppable pantherball in it's tracks...you've been reduced to having to play like....well...like most everyone else. I've watched all of your games and I do think you're on skinny odds if you think all it will take is shaking off the cobwebs.

There is something to be said for momentum. Panthers game depends on as much back and forth football as possible. The constant penalties and errors kills it.

No not at all....that's a lazy lame thing to throw
* feel free to " why it ain't so" etc etc

You know what, you’re right. I’ve reread your post and I probably took parts of it the wrong way.

I think the tunnel ball thing is a bit of a myth though. It was never mentioned before that Parra comeback and now a couple of play the balls seems to be the thing people hang their hat on as the only reason we were dominant.

No...I'll try and dig out my post on the WT forum from mid last year a couple of weeks before it ever was mentioned in rhe media. I rewatched a couple of your games...one I think V the warriors ( and this is not bagging you) I wrote that the "one two" stepping over the ball was being done with deliberate precision...it was 100% coached! ....at it's best there was virtually no halt in momentum even in the ruck and the defences were often getting hammered with 6 agains that they just couldn't prevent. Again...not bagging it...if Ivan or whoever coached it and obviously got away with it then all power to them. Most players of other teams were also doing it but through laziness alone and slowly....your mob were stepping the same way and doing quickly and precisely!

It has very little to do with the rules (although we haven't been on the right side of the refereeing spinny wheel) and everything to do with repeatedly dropping the ball like spuds and multiple edges impersonating turnstiles. When we held on to the ball, our edges weren't exposed and we pummelled the Roosters in virtually the trademark way that brought us our premierships.

I think we need to bench Leota and Sorenson. We are losing games in the first 20 minutes and are not the team to chase points. Henry, Smith and Garner starting aren’t going to win us games but they are our most reliable forwards after Yeo. Go into the second quarter 6 or less down for once and we can play the game on our terms. Leota and Papali’i have looked solid best when the side is on the front foot and a steady first 20 could give them that situation.

Putting Garner and To’o outside McLean/Talagi should help also. McLean can defend fine as he’s showed in first grade last year we just need to put him in a better situation than a noted poor defensive rookie 5/8, a past it prop and a reserve graderfor an edge.

We’re still outlasting every team, we just need to be within a try when the tables start to turn. Tighten it up and play our game and we’re not as far off the best sides as it looks.
