Round 9 Vs Broncos

What a big day yesterday and such an unexpected result for most of us. It goes to show how open the competition really is.

I am not sure where to start. The entire team played well as a team - there were no 'weak links'.

If we had to identify a single catalyst, you'd have to say it was Nathan Cleary. He was a man on a mission and when he decided to pull his finger out, the entire team lifted. Anyone remember how he made 3 or 4 aggressive tackles in a row? From that point on he was a man possessed. As others have pointed out - he kicked the Broncos to death. Reynolds tried to match him and ended up having a similar performance to the 23 GF with the boot. It's amazing what the pressure of a great kicking game can do.

Edwards also had his best game of the season. During this horror stretch I was starting to question the defensive credentials of Edwards but in this game he saved two that most other fullbacks wouldn't. The first was the kick through to Staggs and the 2nd relatively late in the game when the Broncos made a break on their right. He shut that down with positional smarts.

Yeo put in one of his more professional performances. It is so vital that these 3 had good games for us, but they were not alone with several of the newer less experienced players also contributing well. One of the most commendable performances was Jenkins who was just rock solid in every aspect. Sure, he is no To'o but he is extremely handy as a back up winger/centre.

Garner did a great job at centre. He really stabilised that edge in attack and defense. Excellent defense and made a number of incisive runs and had polish and skill when passing.

Luron to the bench was great. A bunch of us were wondering why we haven't seen more of him considering we had no 'punch' on the bench. It seems Ivan finally noticed as well and he didn't disappoint.

Paps had his best game for us and has become an important part of our forward rotation.

Finally I just can't resist giving Tago huge raps. It was easily the best game he's had for us this season. No dropped balls, no silly reads. Made a number of very important runs and shut down everything the Broncos threw his way. I am so glad that Ivan stuck with him, it appears that the dropping to the bench was exactly what was needed to wake Tago up and is a testament to the managerial skill of Ivan.

Without rambling on too much more my last thought about this win was discipline. When we aren't giving away too many stupid penalties we look a far better side.

Something about the big crowd and occassion does it for this team.

Panthers should be doing everything in their power to make these Western Sydney derbies as big as possible. Eels twice, Tigers and Dogs once at Commbank. Those four matches need to be sell outs.

I really cant thunk of a 19 year old outside back id swap Casey for right now, he has huge potential. Anyone writing him even for just this year really has NFI about how players develop.

He went from Matt's to NSW Cup. Skipped some development in there. This was always coming at some stage

Great win and always good to beat the Broncos.
That win should give us the confidence we badly needed.
Just need to keep working hard for each other and they should start climbing the ladder.

Some people just cant compute that players arent even close to done developing at 19/20, most will still be learning and getting better for many years after that age. I remember saying Critta at 25 will be a better centre than Joey Manu was at 25 and getting laughed out of this forum. Only thing wrong about that prediction was how long it would take Critta to blow past manu as a centre. He did it much quicker than even i thought he would.

Manu's peak is still higher but it did only last 1 season really. He was unbelievable that's year

No its not. As an all round footballer Critta's peak that is currently happening now is better than Manu ever was. Manu runs for more metres that is the only thing he does better you cant ignore the rest of the game because metres is an eye popping stat. . Critta is better in every other facet. Defenisively he so much better its not close.

If I could take critta now or Manu at his best im picking Critta easily. Elite defence, elite leadership and much better all round attacking skill set. Manu has not shown half of what Critta has, what he has done as dogs captain is remarkable. Besides his onfield performance making him the games best centre he is one of the few players you an genuinely say makes players around him better.

Posters were putting crap on Crighton when he first started too. Give McLean time to learn the trade.

Exactly. He was eased into First Grade from the BENCH. At that time Ivan was still unsure as to who our fullback would be.

Also remember the game when he got absolutely HOZZED by Waqa Blake? Turns out that lit a fire under Critta that lead to him becoming the best defensive centre in the game.

Peak Manu is a better offensive player, could play 5/8 and fullback well and was unbelievable as a centre. But Critta has him covered as a defender.

More versatile than Critta sure, better ball runner sure. I don’t think he’s more skilled than Critta, Critta has remarkable passing and hands, and he also sets up tries semi regularly with his boot. He’s just better all round and the defensive gap between them is much bigger than the offensive gap.

Peak Manu was awesome in defence.

Would cut off the play and belt blokes.

Latrell, Squiddy and Manu in the same backline was a nightmare for defences. Each of those could easily beat a defender one on one and the Roosters would give the ball to Teddy or the centre depending on how the defence had shifted. Near guaranteed line break.
