POLICE are investigating the bashing of an England supporter at the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens finals last night.

Steve Hanson was beaten by two men in the stands of Telstra Dome after celebrating a try by England against New Zealand at about 10.30pm (AEDT).

Australian resident Hanson was taken by ambulance to Royal Melbourne hospital with a broken nose and head injuries after being punched, choked and threatened.

Hanson, who was released from hospital this morning, said he was sitting next to his wife, Jelena, during the attack.

"I have a fractured nose, I have to see a plastic surgeon during the week," he told ABC radio.

"They can't tell at the moment because it's so swollen if it's going to be all right or not.

"I had a CT scan because I had a lot of blows to the head. I was strangled, so I've got hand prints and bruises around my neck."

Hanson's wife said her husband was subjected to two attacks by the same men.

"There was no security. We waited for some time for somebody to come," she said.

"It was quite some time because he was actually attacked twice.

"So the first fight erupted, settled down for a second and then they just went again," she said.

Police said further information was being sought as an investigation into the attack continued.

Federal Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said the incident was unfortunate but would do little to harm Australia's reputation overseas.

"Any incident like that is tragic but I think what we have to do in promoting Australia is to reinforce the friendliness, the warmth, the openness of Australian society," she said.

"The volunteers at our Commonwealth Games at the moment are typical of the sort of people that our overseas visitors can expect."

Bingo. Nowhere does it say the supporters were New Zealanders.

Skeepe, given the racism problems at the cricket, I don't think people from your mob are one's to be talking about crowd behaviour anyhow.

And let's not even start on Bulldogs games....

Maybe Skeepe's a bit bitter that his precious Brumbies got towelled by the LAST placed NZ S14 side.... bit of a comedown after all that flat-track bullying of crap Australian and Saffa teams isn't it?

Just shows that 7's is a totally different game to the 15 a side and you cant just chuck in high profile players and expect them to succeed. A totally different approach needs to be taken to the game and the aussies just weren't smart enough in their play..took the ball into contact way too many times

Palms I noted that as well, the whole idea of 7's is to get the ball away from the contact area as soon as possible. But some of the teams where playing to the strength of Eng, NZ and SA by running back into traffic.
