R360 OFFER HAAS $3 MILLION UPFRONT
Broncos star Payne Haas could be tempted into a bombshell move to rebel rugby competition R360 by the potential guarantee of a $3 million upfront payment.
Haas is currently holidaying in Fiji with family and contemplating his playing future amid huge interest from the aspiring global rugby concept.
With the NRL salary cap hanging over them, the Broncos cannot come close to competing with the reported money on offer for Haas from R360.
There have been suggestions Haas could earn around US$2 million annually by committing to R360 from 2027.
However, with doubts around the commercial and financial viability of the concept, Haas could seek an upfront guarantee to commit to the competition.
That would see Haas paid a season’s salary in full, circa $3 million, before he has laced up a boot in R360.
Even if the competition folded, Haas would have the money secured.

The stumbling block in that approach would be the NRL’s willingness to welcome Haas back into the code if he wants to return.
The NRL and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys have touted 10-year bans for R360 defectors, but whether the game follows through on those threats remains to be seen.
Former Broncos coach Wayne Bennett said he hoped Haas wasn’t lost to the NRL.
“I absolutely bet the 10-year ban is a deterrent,” Bennett said.
“I have no doubt it will be. We’ll see what Payne does, it’s his decision, I hope he stays but it’s up to him.
“I don’t think it’s a threat. Peter V’landys has handled it really well, his comments have been strong, his leadership has been great, everyone in the game knows where they stand now.”
The Broncos are no clearer about where Haas’ future lies when he comes off-contract at the end of 2026.
They have made him a bumper three-year contract extension offer, worth about $3.5 million, and are awaiting a response.

By who?
So not an upfront offer then?
Absolute BS clickbait trying to dignify itself as journalism. Also, if he was paid A$3m upfront he would be taxed at 50% as a resident Australian I assume?

FYI, the tax on a personal income of $3M would be about $1.3 or 43%

But, I'm pretty sure they would work out what tax avoidance vehicle would work in this situation.

Keen to see how people would justify NOT taking $3M upfront.

But he hasn't been offered that. This is just journo hyperbole. "Haas could seek...." that is not an offer, that is just made up.

Has any player who has signed ever received $3M upfront?

3m upfront would be silly on the organisers part, the risks are pretty obvious. But agreeing to escrow payments or an independent guarantee isn't unheard of. Some of the early LIV defectors got those in place.

As for the tax thing - he'd need to meet ATO's foreign tax resident requirements and there's a number of hoops to jump through, but again, not unheard of. Adam Scott was a Swiss tax resident for a while (maybe still is, dunno) and Daniel Ricciardo based himself out of Monaco during his F1 career. Bunch of current drivers still do.

Haas would probably have to move the whole family with him, amongst other things, but if it means keeping an extra 1.3m pa instead of paying that to the taxman... lots of non-athletes have already done exactly that, and for a whole lot less.

He should get all the money up front if he goes

Still think this is all bs sadly but it’s good content in the off season since all the boys are behaving in Bali

I wonder if the proposed promotion and regelegation for the six nations would ever happen. Cause at some point traditions change.

That said, if Wales were demoted, I'd suggest that would be the end of the sport being pro there ever again. While who knows how Georgia who rank only 1 higher than them, would find having the sport in the big leagues and the money that goes with it.
Who gives a shit

I don't know how Payne would cope with all the attention should he set up shop in Monaco.

The whole no tax thing is being based in Dubai

And it’s not certain he would avoid Australian taxes

Not hard, why do you think these places are full of multi millionaires?

Australian Tax Residency Tests: To be considered a non-resident for Australian tax purposes, you must satisfy the ATO's residency tests:
  • The "Resides" Test: This is the primary test, based on where you ordinarily live. You must demonstrate that you no longer reside in Australia.
  • The Domicile Test: You must establish a "permanent place of abode" outside Australia (e.g., buying or renting a property in Dubai under your name, not a company name). Merely being out of Australia for a set period is not enough; the ATO typically uses two years as a minimum benchmark to demonstrate permanence.
  • The 183-Day Test: You must spend less than 183 days in Australia in an income year.
