Appears that way - all the noise has been that this will be the case. Maybe you know better though.
Just like you knew better about Vegas…..

Can you find any quotes from Albo or any other member of the govt saying anything about changing tax laws? Last time I asked, @Wb1234 refused to source his claim that they had. Maybe you will have more luck.

I’ve deployed overseas on tax rulings made by the Government that made my income tax exempt. It is not exactly anything new. I can’t imagine who would be launching a high court challenge either and doubt whether it would even be accepted by the High Court.

They are suggesting there should be discriminatory practices. If a PNG player and R360 are treated differently despite meeting the same criteria, the R360 player absolutely would be able to challenge any discriminatory law. How do you think the backpacker tax got overturned?

In that case they’ll just refuse to register the contract based on {insert another reason}.
Not without risk. That practice has been exposed, tested and overturned in the past; in an employment context it’s called pretextual discrimination.

If the blanket ban gets thrown out, but they refuse a contract for a returning R360 player ostensibly for something else, they’d fall right into that bucket.

The deployment is actually legislated under s23AG as being non assessable non exempt income.

Tax rulings are issued by the ATO but dont actually have any legal standing unless tested in the courts.

A past it injury prone fullback and a one season wonder who’s one of the worst centres in the game.
Yeah not losing too much sleep over them going.

Abdo is quoted in the below article. Key text below as well.

Has the tax-free incentive been signed off?

The Australian government is yet to sign off on the promised income tax exemption, but Abdo says the players have nothing to worry about.

“It’s completely tax-free in PNG,” Abdo said. “And we’re in the process of confirming the exemption for ensuring that non-resident Australians aren’t taxed in Australia.

“The legislation exists already, and it’s really just around formalising that through the actual package that will be offered to these individuals.”

Residents of other countries will not be entitled to the exemption as the deal is between the Australian and PNG governments.

As a result, New Zealand and England residents will not be financially advantaged by joining the Chiefs, reducing the potential player pool.

It's funny because the only reason PVL did the ban was due to the clubs complaining.
Hoping it would discourage players from leaving, it has not, and will not.

Those very same clubs will want players to return to them, when they inevitably become available again.

I hope Lomax is well advised and has done his own due diligence. If r360 does kick off in less than a year from now, it will be a rush job, which potentially threatens the viability already in year 1. R360 are better off launching in 2028, after the RWC.

As for the NRL, get the tv deal done over the next few months, which would hopefully give more financial certainty to the players and the code as a whole.
We give Perth 15 months to build a roster and there's legitimate concerns on the quality of that squad but after a few years, we're confident it'll come together.
An entire competition, spanning the globe.. in half that time...
I think they'll all be absolute dog shit, shit sandwich without the bread, worst football you've ever seen in a 150 years.

There has definitely been precedents in the contrary to what you’re stating here.

Its only 6 teams though, and with unlimited cash behind it.

They have done it before with Golf and Soccer. Its not really about the quality of the sport, but the eyeballs that can be drawn to it using hype and well known players.

The NRL will be fine... don't worry I reckon PVL will be chatting with his NFL mates about how to challenge this issue. This isn't our first rodeo, meanwhile for Rugby they are in un charted waters.

Agreed.

Ultimately the NRL will be fine. The really annoying thing is dealing with the constant news articles by the media. That's more frustrating than the players actually leaving.

I'd love nothing more than for the NRL to cut off access to these journos but they won't.

So no actual new tax law is going to be introduced, just the normal residency rules? Geez I hope any player who signs a 1 or 2 year contract understands they are likely to have to pay tax in Australia.

The residency rules have been tested in court, and any players on short term contracts who don't cut ties with Australia will likely be considered residents.
