Smith said the club would not have to sack him if he thought he could not guide the Eels back to the top because he would quit.

"If I thought it was all doom and gloom, mate, I'd be out of here," he said. "I'm not suggesting it's going to be easy. It never is. It wasn't easy when we flying along at the top in 2001.

"It wasn't easy then trying to hold on to it and, as it turned out, we couldn't quite do it. We've just got to knuckle down and find some improvement."
