Rugby star charged with car theft
March 5, 2004
THE ACT Rugby Union today stood down player Henari Veratau from the Brumbies' upcoming trip to South Africa after he was charged with stealing a cab in Canberra, the union said in a statement.
Rugby Union CEO Rob Clarke said the organisation was cooperating with the police and the union would conduct a separate internal investigation.
"We've been in touch with the police and we'll do what we can to assist them with their investigation," he said.
"We've also opened a separate internal investigation into the matter."
Clarke said the allegations and charges were extremely disappointing.
"The allegations and subsequent charges are serious and extremely disappointing.
"It's alleged that Henari has broken the law, and if he has, he will have to deal with the consequences."
Clarke said the decision to stand Veratau down from the team means he will not travel to South Africa with his team mates.
"Henari was selected in the 26 man squad to travel to South Africa but he won't be going now," he said.
"He has a responsibility to deal with the allegations and charges, and we feel it's best that he do that in person."
Veratau is being held in the Canberra city watch house until he fronts the ACT Magistrates court tomorrow.
It's alleged a 38-year-old taxi driver was dragged from his seat after an argument over a fare at about 6am today and had his cab stolen.
