I don't profess to know as much about RL as some of the experts on here, but my take on it is pretty simple and kind of justifies both arguments/points of view about Hayne and his lack of premiership success to-date.
RL is a team sport and effectively there are 4 components to it and 3 of those are offence (the 4th is obviously defence).
1. You need a strong forward pack that while it not always "win the ruck" it does make enough meterage to sometimes upset the defensive structure of the opposition and create an opportunity for the offence. This may be an off-load, a quick play the ball, lots of things can create this.
2. You need smart halves (at least one of them must be smart - the other can be a worker but the combination includes "smart"). By smart I mean someone able to read the play and make a decision on where and how to attack in whatever opportunity the forwards have created.
3. You need finishers in the backs, including the fullback. This can be speed, strength, good passing, whatever - your backs need to be able to react to whatever the halves decide to do and react well. They also have the chance to create more opportunity which is where Hayne was excellent, with his acceleration, swerve, long passing game, kick and chase, etc. etc. etc.
Unfortunately for Jarryd and us long-suffering fans, until 2016 we haven't had the mix of forwards that can create, halves that can decide and backs that can finish. Hopefully we do now.
And before I get flamed, yes - in the modern game, the backs help the forwards ruck it out and the edge forward is part of the backs in a lot of offensive moves but you know what I mean so no need to be an ass about it.
