We all love a happy ending, but this is professional sport, not a hollywood movie.

Johnny Mannah is average and is behind Josh Cordoba in the pecking order at Cronulla. We shouldn't be wasting our time.

I disagree, I think he would be a good gain who could offer plenty off the bench mixed in with a good pack. He isn't a superstar, but gets the job done.

I can't say i've watched many Cronulla games to get a gauge on Johnny Mannah's progress however with Timmy, Fui, Shack, Mitch, Justin, Carl and the toyota cup boys(if they don't get snapped up by Melbourne of anyone else), is there really any room?
I would say wenty at best with a chance to prove himself. I'm sure there would be another club in more need of his services than us.

Someone in the NRL forum's Rumour thread reckons that Souths will be taking Mortimer on full wages.

Sounds like a fair swap, we get Hayne and Sandow in the halves they get Sutton and Mortimer.

What, let go of Mortimer? No Way, he has a future in our club.
Yeah, laugh your heads off at him - but he will come back better than ever, maybe not as a 6 or 7 but he will find his way back into the top grade as a 14/utility. We have not seen the last of Daniel Mortimer.

I'm just concerned we're starting to look a bit skinny on halves depth. McGuire and Humble are both off contract. I'd say Bruest has been earmarked for a top 25 spot next year but still, we've so far got one specialist hooker with first grade experience signed for next year.

Didnt we sign some kid from union (an ex eel)? a half?

As for the 9; I agree. I
f Casey decides to call it quits and Keating gets injured next year...we are going to struggle with depth!
I think the way things are going keating will be a 80 min hooker next year! Hopefully mooks brings in a kid with some potential for cover....see what happens...

from all reports Bruest isn't up to NRL footy. Outside of one half of footy I havn't seen too much of him but from what little I saw I tend to agree. If we do lose Mortimer that should free up 200-250K and you would imagine for the same money they would be able to keep Humble and MaGuire or get at least one if not two replacements.

As it has been mentioned we signed some kid from rugby 7s who was a former Eels jnr and we also have the option of shifting Matuia or Hayne back to 6 with Burt in the 1 if things become dire.

As someone said the other day... It is good for Parra if Morts hits some form and becomes a better half. Having some depth in our halves and putting pressure on whoever is in the top team to perform should only be a good thing for us. Morts and Robson were allowed to under perform last year and this year, without any pressure as there was no one below them really vying for their spots.

i can't see how morts could play so good in 09 and make breaks and put players in holes etc and then in 10 and 11 has been no better than a reserve grader. You don't lose talent it has to be mental.

Agreed.

There is a chronic problem amongst many Eels forumites to write off players if they don't meet their standards, whatever the f**k that may be. Sometimes they will get it wrong, maybe more than sometimes. They just love sticking the knife in real hard.

Taulima Tautai - being an example.
Daniel Mortimer - another.
Ben Smith - another
Luke Burt - another though not as many back stabbers as Benny got over the years.
Justin Poore - another
Todd Lowrie - another

This list goes on and on and on.

Did he ? Love to see his LBA, TA & LB stats for 2009. I'm thinking that he rode the Hayne Train and the GF hype together the Dogs interest got him a contract extension, nothing more.

Ah that's right, Seage (sp?)

from all reports Bruest isn't up to NRL footy.

Too slow? Too small? Lack of skill? Mentally weak? What have you heard?

From what I've seen he can kick and he's not small. That already puts him ahead of most other 20-year old halfbacks.

Morts and Robson were allowed to under perform last year and this year, without any pressure as there was no one below them really vying for their spots.

I don't think lack of pressure from reserve grade is a valid excuse for not performing. These guys are professional footballers - they should be internally driven to perform their best. If anything, most players need reassurance that they won't get the arse after one bad game - this is why coaches guarantee players a spot for X number of weeks; so that the player doesn't succumb to the fear of failure and stop taking risks.

If Robson and Morts were shit last year it wasn't from lack of external pressure. The fact they weren't replaced just means we didn't have anyone at Wenty performing any better.

He made a lot of LB (12 I believe) but very few LBA (3 iirc). This has contributed to convincing me that LBAs are the true measure of a playmaker and we should have seen the writing on the wall with Morts.

From what I've seen of Bruest (TYC televised games) he does not lead the team around.

His work rate is not high enough and he leaves the team without direction while he has a time out.

Technically he is OK but he just doesn't strike me as a half who will lead an NRL team around the park.
