Until we are consistently competitive we won't get any value out of the most in-demand players.

Until we are a club where players want to be, we're better off recruiting solid first graders with good attitudes. We'll still have to pay overs, but far less compared to how much extra we'd have to pay for stars.

Gould and Cleary understood this when they took over at Penrith. Eels decision makers in recent years have been focused on appeasing idiot fans by signing big names.

Expect Parramatta to announce they have signed lanky Titans utility Brad Takairangi any day now.
Talks stalled a few days ago because Takairangi wanted a three-year deal and the Eels were only willing to offer one season after his contract with the Tigers fell through.
In the end, Takairangi will take one year and an option - and the Tigers will foot some of the bill because they pulled out of the deal after agreeing to terms.

I watched the tits a few times and found that Brad Takairangi showed some good footwork and passing skills this year. At 105kgs he provides some options.

Watmough and Merrin would be a massive coup. Our forward pack would pose a real threat.

I would take Merrin over Watmough.

Merrin can cover Prop, 2nd Row and Lock

Has a good passing game and can run to the line and plays the middle of the field and is much younger than Watmough.

Can't see us getting both

As I stated yesterday, Watmough is Parra bound, it's just a matter of when.

Who were these big names?

Hayne (the retention thereof), plus Sandow, Hopoate and Lussick were all big names at the time. Willie Tonga was a current Origin player but was also a bit 'mature', reducing the hype. Anthony Watmough is probably still a 'big name' though if he were off contract I doubt there would be as much interest as there would be for guys like Merrin, Foran, etc, due to Watmough's age.

So when I say 'big name' I'm talking about the kind of thing that drives a player's price up - generally a mixture of ability and youth (and therefore the expectation of improvement over the duration of the contract).

Looking at his stats he doent miss heaps of tackles- 31 in 22 games in a team that was ordinary.
He doesn't make many line breaks but he does average 2 offloads per game. The most tackles he missed in a game was 3 so I assume he never gets targeted or had a terrible game.
Will be better than morgan or champion even if just slightly and would not be costing much-good signing IMO.Gives Davis falou and co xtra year to come good
