“A $500,000 contract and a new car is all that it took the Sydney Roosters to secure Manly legend Daly Cherry-Evans for next season.

And your columnist can also reveal that it was Cherry-Evans and his manager who approached the Roosters first, not the other way round.

DCE’s agent Joe Wehbe has long had a tight relationship with the Roosters.

Although he is unaccredited, Wehbe manages champion fullback James Tedesco plus centre Billy Smith – and next year will deliver Cherry-Evans and NSW Origin hooker Reece Robson.

While the Roosters still refuse to confirm a contract has been signed, Cherry-Evans will be wearing their jersey in 2026 unless he makes a last-minute decision to retire.

The $500,000 price tag will shock footy fans.

Most thought it was closer to $800,000.

That he is leaving the northern beaches for less than Manly offered him illustrates the enormous level of resentment that Cherry-Evans has for the Sea Eagles.

He says he felt disrespected about the way negotiations with Manly played out, hence the announcement on live television in round four that he was leaving after 15 seasons.

At 37 next year, DCE will get a fresh start at the Roosters.

There will also be the opportunity for a career after football to learn about coaching under Trent Robinson, who has already brought through the likes of Craig Fitzgibbon, Jason Ryles and the late Paul Green.

The news that Cherry-Evans is prepared to play at a discount rate means he will be on half the money of boom halfback Sam Walker, who has also been guaranteed he will keep the No.7 jersey next year.

It also enables the Roosters to upgrade and extend five-eighth Hugo Savala from his current $80,000 development contract to a long-term deal.@

How can the contract be cleared by the NRL at $500k and a car? The bloke played SOO this year, albeit badly.
Manly reportedly offered $750k

Maybe the car is a Rolls Royce, and he'll have to invest in a monocle.

Tbh I have no issues with a player taking less if that what DCE has agreed to do. It shits me to tears when the NRL (rarely and randomly) decides to get involved in telling a club and player what they should sign for, basically.

Ofc that doesn't extend to trying to get money paid outside the cap when that happens, which we all know it does

Im fully on board with it after last night. Savala has been great this year but clearly isn't ready to lead the side around and another year of development will do him a world of good. He will still play first grade games and possibly get a run in the forwards or on the bench.

It's not realistic to believe Walker won't miss games through injury and its also possible he will play for QLD. A Savala/Watson halves combo when he isn't there just isn't going to cut it.

Maaaaaan if I was Dodd I'd burst into laughter and wander off shaking my head if the Bunnies tried to move me on or negotiate a release.

Imagine being a 23 year old Pom getting paid 650,000 bucks to chill playing reserve grade and have a full time Aussie working holiday.
Unless you had a scintilla of pride and ambition and still cared about your career goals. Apparently Perpignan/Les Catalans is nice most of the year and he will be playing in a league that is suited to his skill levels. He'll also be able to visit home more often. Or he could stay for the money and walk around Sydney with a big L on his forehead for a couple more years.

Souths will need to move on a few more than just Dodd for Wayne to perform the full surgery the squad needs. A few clubs have been able to move on contracted players at will recently. Parra and the Roosters are 2 that come to mind.

Well they can move him on, it's just if no NRL clubs are going to bite. Then Souths will need to throw in even more money cause he would be considered a marquee player in the English Super league with the salary they would need to get him on. The money is just not in the English game anymore, well not for a player who hasn't performed at that level for a while.

No issue with a 37yo getting a reduced contract. He's a reduced player. His 2025 form showed that.

23 year old kid from the UK is never gonna see 650k a year again tbh. What is the most basic career goal? He can stick it out, play his best for NSW Cup, earn good cash and be able to go home and say well I played well at a level below my ability and didn't get NRL time cos the coach hated me. Plus Creeping might pop off his perch and he might get a coach who actually puts some development into him. Or he could run away and be another Chris Thorman.

Not his fault Demetriou signed him to a shit deal and not his fault Creeping put a line through him before he even started the job.

It makes a mockery of the salary cap (which it already is to a degree). I get that he is old now in playing terms and his form has dropped off, but if he was offered 750k and is happy to take 500k, it shows the great advantage the higher ranked teams have with the salary cap. Not that I would want him at my club, but he would want 1m or close to it to go to a low rated team while the Roosters will be able to pick him up for half the price.
