I have a theory that the current V’landys style of play is to appeal to the younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
The frequent, fast paced content of today’s media provides rapid hits of dopamine and trains the brain to expect instant gratification.
I’ve noticed the ‘stories’ on the NRL app feature that provides short snippets of tries, hits, try saves etc. This is effectively the match highlights but appeases the short attentive span of these generations when they can’t even sit through a 3-5minute package of it all.
With the stern adjudicating of the six-again, we have a fast paced, touch football like game with more tries, big scores and more highlight reels.
This of course is at the demise of the battle of attrition; how many of us fell in love with the game.
I personally like the 6-again rule. I just wish it was in the back of the mind of the referee as opposed to the forefront (ie not adjudicated so harshly). It acts like a general deterrent regardless when the players know of the threat.
