They had their two best players out.

They were replaced by TMM and Corey Jensen. And Jensen might be a backup but he only played 25 minutes in the grand final, even with Fensom injured early. Matt Scott was actually replaced by more minutes to Taumalolo, Asiata, Hess and Bolton. He was easily replaced.

Moeroa and Alvaro aren't so hard to replace either* (being middle forwards) but when you lose your top two players at the same position you're having to replace them with a bloke with significant flaws. Will Smith was our best against Melbourne but against the Cowboys he was probably our worst player.

*obviously they were very hard to replace in those games in which they were injured

We were certainly outplayed in the middle. Only having 45% possession didn't help, but it was probably as much the effect as the cause.
