Parramatta should make the top four this year. Sadly, I can't see Penrith coming anywhere near the top four in the next few years, Hindy.

I dont want to feel too confident but I feel like eels are a top chance of taking it all this year.

Panthers will do ok. Tamou and Merrin will be a lot better. And a lot of their young guys will start too put it together. Guys like
Edwards,CNN, Rgc,Jfh,Blake,Kikau,Dwz,cleary,May are going to be a lot better players this year and more experienced. Veey very young side.

Penrith might do ok but I think there's a good chance it could all go pear shaped, Griffin gets sacked and they start a new five year plan. Seems to be a lot of unrest out there.

This system would have floors also like any. But it would create the most even comp.
Salary cap wont factor in Origin payments or lifestyles. High profile Players are going to sacrifice 50k to live on the nth beaches over Penrith more often then not.And if at a strong club your chances of origin increases.

I feel like both Parra and Penrith can make finals again and even top 4.

How do you think i felt when both where rubish ? Twice the pain.

Headlines and off-field troubles haven’t hurt Jarryd Hayne’s popularity with Eels fans

PHIL ROTHFIELD, The Sunday Telegraph
February 10, 2018 5:00pm

JARRYD Hayne remains rugby league’s biggest drawcard in the west, despite an off-season marked by off-field scandal and criticism of his pre-season training performances.

As the Eels hit back at claims he is unfit, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the dual Dally M medallist has helped drive a massive spike in membership.

The club will hit 20,000 members today, well ahead of last year’s figures, and club officials believe Hayne’s return, combined with optimism about coach Brad Arthur’s playing list, has played major part in the revival.

As part of the Eels Captains Club membership, fans can select a player to be photographed with before the season.

He is twice as popular as every other player bar fullback Clint Gutherson. Mitchell Moses, Corey Norman and Bevan French are the other most popular players but trail far behind Hayne’s fan appeal.

Hayne’s return to the Eels was overshadowed by shock news he faced rape allegations stemming from his time playing NFL in California.

He was back in the headlines last month when Parramatta coach Brad Arthur and his 12-year-old son beat the speedster home in the team’s last endurance time trial on Central Coast sand hills.

Pictures showed Hayne is nowhere near the days when he tore apart the best defences in rugby league.

The deterioration in his body shape since he last played for the Eels in 2014 is obvious.

Not that the Eels are concerned in the countdown to Hayne’s likely return to the blue and gold in the club’s trial against Newcastle on Saturday week

The club’s head of high performance Lachlan Wilmott told The Sunday Telegraph the recruit is on target for the premiership kick-off next month.

“The media have found a couple of images that might suggest he’s further off the pace than what he actually is,” Wilmott said.

“We’re under no illusions we need to do more with him and some other players.

“But you give him the short, sharp explosive work and he’ll take anyone to the rope with that and show them what to do.”

Reports from the Gold Coast Titans last year were all about Hayne’s poor attitude and a falling out with coach Neil Henry that cost him his job.

Then Hayne himself quit his $1 million contract to return home to the Eels on half the money.

“I’ve worked with much harder athletes than Jarryd,” Wilmott said.

“Jarryd’s done everything we’ve asked of him. Absolutely no issues. No blow-ups.

“He’s been happy to do everything. Like every other player and I can’t fault him.”

Still the Eels head trainer admits his star player needs to lose several kilos.

“As players start to get older it’s always a challenge to keep weight off,” he said. “We’ve had a bit of a focus on his body composition.

“We’d like to take off two or three kilos of that extra weight and put on another one to two of muscle.

“It’s a slight adjustment to the diet and hard work.”

The Eels are $11 to win their first premiership since 1986, trailing only the Sydney Roosters, Melbourne and North Queensland.

IT’S INVITATION LONELY

BIG-spending ARL chairman John Grant appears to be having trouble getting the numbers for his farewell bash at the Museum of Contemporary Art this month.

We can confirm a number of powerbrokers are boycotting the event but, rather than cutting back the size of the dinner and saving money for junior players, Grant is simply inviting more people in an attempt to fill the room.

Through the week, a new batch of invites for people who were on the “reserves bench” went out, including to my colleague Michael Carayannis who, by his own admission, has had little to do with Grant.

That hasn’t stopped the outgoing chairman who continues to spend the game’s money on himself.

In fact, Grant has also arranged a party for his Brisbane friends on the night before his Sydney bash.

And still this columnist can’t get a start!

Who can it be now? My 2018 Premiership predictions

The 2018 NRL season is fast approaching and I am beyond excited!!

This year shapes as one of the tightest competitions in recent memory, with a merry-go-round of players in full swing right throughout the summer sides have picked up fresh faces, big names and troubled stars. Trying to pick the winner and top 8 this far out is a tough gig, so naturally I’ll attempt that and more. Hopefully, there’s not too much egg on my face come October.

The top eight
Melbourne Storm– Two words, Craig Bellamy. The Storm will be well drilled, incredibly fit and disciplined beyond belief in the opening rounds which usually takes them to the minor premiership. Very tough to beat the defending champs even with their star halfback leaving.

North Queensland Cowboys– The return of Thurston and Scott and the addition of Jordan McLean will be a huge plus for Paul Green’s men. Jason Taumalolo will be looking to cement his status as the best forward in the game.

Parramatta Eels– Tough, aggressive forward pack, slick outside backs and two of the best attacking halves in the competition. The Eels have all the ingredients to give this competition a shake and I think they will.

Sydney Roosters– Thanks to Uncle Nick Politis the Bondi boys have more stars than Hollywood. Even with some of the biggest names in the game their depth may be tested at different stages, especially with a few aging forwards. They are always a chance with the roster they assemble each year.

Brisbane Broncos– One of the smaller packs in the NRL but year after year Wayne Bennett just finds a way. Write him off at your own peril. Once Jack Bird returns from injury expect big things from the Superstar signing.

St George Illawarra Dragons– The Red V making the top 6 may surprise some pundits but I expect them to do quite well. Already a great forward pack they welcome James Graham who will bring the competitive attitude the Dragons need in tight games. Ben Hunt will need to be excellent from the get go or face the wrath of some of the harshest supporters in the league.

Penrith Panthers– Even with the off field sideshow going on, a team with Nathan Cleary, James Maloney and a near representative forward pack will be making the top 8. Reagan Campbell-Gillard will look to lead the way up front. Anthony Griffin is under huge pressure.

Cronulla Sutherland Sharks– Could finish anywhere from 1 to 16 so I’ve put them right in the middle. With an unproven 6 in Moylan outside him Chad Townsend will take on a huge responsibility, his experienced forward pack will hope he doesn’t become flustered under pressure as he has in the past.

The rest of the sides will spring more than a few upsets during the year, taking big scalps with them but if injuries hit, they won’t have the depth to compete with the top squads. The Worst of the lot will be the Canberra Raiders. Already losing Hodgson hurts them and i think Ricky Stuart is wearing thin on the players which he has a tendency to do after 3 years at the helm.

The other accolades
Premiers– North Queensland Cowboys. JT goes out a winner.

Runners Up– Parramatta Eels. So close yet so far for the yellow and blues.

Wooden Spoon– Canberra Raiders. Ricky collects some more woodwork.

State of Origin– NSW Blues (FINALLY!)

Dally M– Corey Norman. Attacking genius with the swagger of an origin star.

Top Try Scorer– Suliasi Vunivalu. Exceptional finisher in an exceptional side, no brainer.

Top Point Scorer– Jonathan Thurston. No Rep footy will do wonders for the future immortal.
