After all the controversy, Parramatta gave Corey Norman a pay rise. And they were right to do so

PAUL KENT, The Daily Telegraph

IN the past six months Corey Norman, off contract, has been busy.

He pleaded guilty to two minor drug charges. He filmed a sex tape and forgot to blush when he got extorted over it.

Police warned him for consorting with criminals and then there was the small matter of distributing a video of himself using drugs to other NRL players.

He finally got suspended by the NRL in time to get himself a hefty payrise, a three-year deal worth $2.2 million.

And the funny thing is, the Eels did exactly what they should have done.

Norman is a real asset for Parramatta — on the field at least.
Good players win premierships, not blooming citizens.

Parramatta’s attack has been popgun without Norman. When Norman was teamed with Kieran Foran earlier in the season the Eels were true premiership contenders.

The lesson is clear. One is good, two are near unstoppable.

With Foran having since negotiated his release from the club the Eels are cashed up and ready to go to market for a halfback.

The Eels played it safe and extended Jeff Robson into next year but coach Brad Arthur would be crazy to rest for 12 months. They are not alone.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has stuck by his troubled players.
St George Illawarra’s season failed because of an inability to score points, with it generally conceded that everyone but Canterbury the halves dictate the attack.

Benji Marshall won’t be there next season and the Dragons have the cash to find a halfback. Problem is, where do they go? There isn’t a halfback available.

Norman was the last established half available after Luke Keary signed with the Roosters for next season and Cooper Cronk re-signed with Melbourne.

If pickings are slim this year then next year is a smorgasbord.

Johnathan Thurston, Adam Reynolds, Gareth Widdop, Mitchell Pearce, Ben Hunt, Anthony Milford, Josh Reynolds, Jack Bird and Shaun Johnson have all played international or Origin footy and are all off contract at the end of 2017.

Also off contract will be Country Origin rep Tyrone Roberts and rising stars Mitchell Moses, Luke Brooks, Ash Taylor, Connor Watson and Jackson Hastings.

Expect a feeding frenzy to take place. Not next season, though. It will happen long before then.

The Dragons have dropped Benji — now they have to find a replacement.
The Eels can’t afford to wait until next season and neither can the Dragons.

All good manners will be left at the door as both look to stiffen their rosters for next season — and not the season after.

Contracts have never been worth the hot air they’re spoken of and never more so in the NRL.

There has been a dozen players or thereabouts — like Konrad Hurrell, Junior Paulo, Elijah Taylor, Chris Grevsmuhl, Tariq Sims, Ryan Morgan, Joe Burgess, Nathan Peats, Joe Tapine — who will end this season in a different jersey than the one they began in.

With such a list of halfbacks soon to be on the market negotiations must begin immediately.

Parramatta now have cash and a Kieran Foran-shaped hole.
Norman is a wonderful talent and just how necessary he is to Parramatta was shown when he crucified his team’s season by getting himself suspended.

What small chance Parramatta had until that time was gone. Arthur continues to protect him, understandably.

He called Norman a “good kid” who made “bad decisions”, something we have all been guilty of. The trick is to learn from them.

More than his own career rests on his performances for the Eels.

Eels should chase Adam Reynolds: Daley
Matt Encarnacion - AAP on August 24, 2016, 8:30 pm

NSW State of Origin coach Laurie Daley feels Adam Reynolds is the man to end Parramatta's halfback curse.

Daley, who coached Reynolds at Origin level this year, believes the South Sydney No.7 would be the perfect foil next season for the just re-signed Corey Norman.

However, he prefaced his selection on whether the Eels, who watched marquee man Kieran Foran dramatically walk away this year, considered themselves one piece away from contending for a premiership.

The Eels' 11 wins this year would have had them in contention for the top eight if not for a 12-point deduction for salary-cap cheating.

"It depends if they think they need two-three years to win a competition or whether they think one player can get them over the line straight away," Daley said on Wednesday evening on Fox Sports' NRL 360 program.

"The guy that I'd be looking at right there and then would be Adam Reynolds.

"For me, he's 25; he's won a premiership; he controls a game, great kicking game."

Reynolds heads a long list of playmakers off contract at the end of next season, including Mitchell Moses, Luke Brooks, Jack Bird, Ashley Taylor, Ben Hunt, Anthony Milford and Mitchell Pearce.

Mercurial stars Johnathan Thurston and Shaun Johnson will also be free but are considered untouchable.

"They may have to wait 12 months," Daley said.

"But the big question will be, obviously they're spending a lot of money keeping Corey Norman there. So the next halfback to come in would have to complement his style of football."

Convincing Reynolds to leave Redfern could be a stumbling block, however, given the Rabbitohs have already let Luke Keary go this year and have rookie Cody Walker pencilled in to start at pivot.

Greg Inglis could also be an option to move to the halves.

"He'll probably stay there at Souths, but he'd be the one that I'd look at and go, you know what, I reckon he'd form a good combination with Corey Norman," Daley said.

The Eels have money to burn after this year's cap scandal forced Nathan Peats, Junior Paulo and Ryan Morgan to depart the club mid-season.

Foran walked away to address personal issues, Anthony Watmough also retired on medical grounds, while former star Jarryd Hayne spurned a big-money deal to come back to the NRL with Gold Coast.

There would be genuine benefits of having Gutherson over many other halves options - he is a better runner and defender than most of them. The downside is his kicking game is very poor and his decision making is poor due to lack of experience.

I think the main priority for a half should be his kicking game, because I think this is probably Norman's weakest area.

Dont think it did. If i recall correctly it was reported norman sent a video of someone else taking drugs. Perhaps it wasnt someone else?

Every report was pretty clear that it was an older guy that wasn't him. If I was Corey I'd be demanding a public retraction and apology.

So he should just be allowed to claim that Corey is taking videos of himself taking drugs now? this is acceptable to you?
He has been caught in possession of drugs, and allowed himself to be filmed performing a sex act. I don't think this latest claim will cause any extra damage to his reputation.
