But when the personal attacks stopped being good natured I didn’t really have a choice. Plus they have nothing interesting to say, much less intellectually honest. That's been suggested to him "good naturedly" many times over the years. Just as he has suggested the same to others. If the guy is experiencing some mental health challenges then there is support available both here and elsewhere.

I'm sorry, but the way the guy has delivered his "footy opinions" here over the years (up until recently) should not be immune to any subjective criticism, should people seek to exercise their right to respond and post their opinions on the matter (or manner) also.
