The market meant we had to pay overs per-player but we never would've paid ludicrous money like some people think. The most overs we would've paid were to Hayne but any shit club is probably paying their stars far more than they're worth - look at the Tigers with Farah. That's why the best way to rebuild is to f**k your stars off and buy some dependable plodders. That way you're at least able to have 12 solid defenders in your line. Then you look at taking a risk on an injury prone star or up-and-coming youngster.
It would be easy to decide the risk and value of a player - every club would have the same ideas about price, with minor variations depending on need at certain positions or roles (e.g. captain or goalkicker). The problem is all the clubs with good reputations would be able to get players at value (or cheaper) whereas we were having to offer overs for each player (except where we were the only club offering a top 25 or even top 17 spot). That adds up to a big difference in quality between squads.
Newcastle appear to be trying your theory this year Pou Bear. Interesting to see how it goes for them.
