His defense is horrendous, unless the ball is within a few metres of him he just walks or stops. No scramble, no chase.

That game vs the titans last year, he only played 20 or so minutes starting but that edge was getting gashed. Tbaz must have hooked him.

For me you gotta have some level of competence in defence to play in the nrl. I just don't see it with Matt.

No it was a great call. Cleary was picked in Origin just based on potential, not on his ability at the time. Which was no better than Jeff Robson at his peak.

Sounds like the type of call out recruitment has made over the last 30yrs and why we've won nothing.

Our recruitment knows who the good players are, and they understand young players improve. It’s why we signed Moses who everyone thought was a downhill skiier who couldn’t tackle. At the time that’s what he was. But his defence is solid these days and he proved in Origin he can step up with a good team around him.

So we know the quality of players. The reason we’ve won nothing is because we can’t fit enough good players under the cap. It’s why after the 2022 grand final we lost a quarter of our team.

It’s a similar trajectory to Dylan Brown, though he doesn’t kick well. Laughing at Gronk now is like laughing at the people who said Moses was shit seven years ago. At the time they were right. The fact he has improved as a player doesn’t change the past, as though he was always this good.

On a related note, Blaize Talagi’s defence will improve. Does that mean we’re all going to be f**kwits for criticising his defence in 2024? We are right. We won’t be wrong in hindsight.

His problem has been fitness. His defence when he’s actually doing it is fine and as others said his attack can be top shelf. But it’s always been, dare I say, efforts on efforts where he goes missing. It’s probable that his injury set him back, but it’s also possible it’s set him back to the point where it’s also now a mental block for him to ever be fit enough again. Same with Dunster
