Footy is a business’: Moses speaks on Gutherson, Eels and injury

After eight years at the helm, Mitchell Moses and Clint Gutherson’s time together at Parramatta has finally come to a close.
With Gutherson inking a three-year deal with the Dragons and Moses staying on as part of the Jason Ryles revolution, the Eels’ halfback said he was sad and excited for what the 2025 season has to offer.

It’s really tough. He’s one of my best mates, and it’s sad,” Moses said, following the Kangaroos’ Pacific Championship victory against Tonga.
“It’s sad to see how it happened (Gutherson’s move) and how it ended, but it is what it is. It’s rugby league, and I think he understands that. Everyone understands it, and it’s hard – you don’t want it to be true, but I’m going to miss playing with him.
“I’ve come through at Parra and we’ve been playing together for the last eight years, so it’s going to be different, but I’m so happy for him as well – he’s got a great deal up there and he’ll be really good for the Dragons, and I wish him all the best.”
Moses said he had spoken to Gutherson most days, despite being in Kangaroos camp, and said the former Eels skipper knows it’s just part of the business.
“Footy is a business, and if it’s not working, if something needs change, that’s just how it is and sometimes players that you don’t think are going to leave, it happens,” Moses said.
“He (Gutherson) understands, the club understands – I think everyone understands, really. It’s sad to see, don’t want it to be true, but it’s happened so we’ve got to move on.”
The Kangaroos’ victory caps off a mixed year for Moses, which included an Origin series win, a bicep injury and foot injury that saw him play just eight games for the Eels this season, and Parramatta narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon.
Moses described 2024 as a tough year.
“I had the highs of Origin, highs of this (the Kangaroos), highs of rep footy really, but club footy not too well. Got a whole change of scenery there going back there, so I’m really excited to get back there and go to work,” he said.
“I’m not too sure [what next year looks like]. Obviously, excited to get back into training, so I’ll have a couple of weeks off. I haven’t played too much footy this year, but it’s been a long season, just for myself with injuries, and it’s been a bit draining, to be honest.”
“From players 18 to 30 it’s a whole new squad. Even our starting squad will look completely different. We’ve added some great additions, hopefully we can add some more. I’m excited for the future and I think under Rylesy we will be alright, and I think if everyone comes in with the right attitude, comes into training, hopefully we’re in for a good year.”
With Gutherson leaving the club, the Eels’ captaincy is up for grabs.
Moses has previously said he would be open to taking on the role, but was evasive when asked if he wanted the responsibility: “We will see what happens,” he said.

Sounded like the total opposite of what Ryles had been trying to do here, it would of been totally believable if Baldy was still here.
Sometimes clubs need to fill a vacuum of experience with an older player.

A bit like when Melbourne signed this guy at age 33.

And what do you lose in 2025 by making that decision? I see no reason to believe that May is going to come at a discount.
So far all the teams mentioned as interested in him are struggling teams (we also in that category) but I can confidently say we're on the up and if did pursue him have that advantage, however he may not know/believe that. Anyway perhaps Ryles believes one of our younger forwards is potentially as good and much cheaper or perhaps those clubs chasing May have priced him outside our price point.

Our pack is old enough, we need some leg speed in the middle. Something a 34 on his last legs won’t provide.

Well Storm made the GF that year and Ryles wasn't part of it. He backed up again in 2013 and actually played more games all off the bench this time because of injuries.

Do you think that Vaughan would be looked as a starter or depth ?

Melbourne Storm
1 - Billy Slater
2 - Sisa Waqa
3 - Dane Nielsen
4 - Will Chambers
5 - Justin O'Neill
6 - Gareth Widdop
7 - Cooper Cronk
8 - Jessie Bromwich
9 - Cameron Smith
10 - Bryan Norrie
11 - Sika Manu
12 - Ryan Hoffman
13 - Todd Lowire

Interchange (from):
14 - Ryan Hinchcliffe
15 - Kevin Proctor
16 - Jaiman Lowe
17 - Richie Fa'aoso
18 - Rory Kostjayson
19 - Mahe Fonua
20 - Siosaia Vave
21 - Anthony Quinn

Coach: Craig Bellamy

You are seriously not trying to compare the game circa early 2010’s to now?? You’re not are you?? Peak wrestle mania??

vs V’Landy’s 6 again ball?? lol.

You are allergic to Apples vs Apples comparisons, the fact is it’s just not his age it’s his body size. We already have 2 120kg plus middles in the top 30 one more is ridiculous in this day and age.

I think you've just gone off on a stubborn tangent.

I was just talking about how clubs DO bring in older forwards for experience and the inconvenient truth for you was our coach was one of those players.

IF our club has a gap in experience in the top 30, then it might be being looked at. What do you think our NSW Cup pack + bench will look like in 2025 ?

BD Ryles has spent 3 months making tough and smart decisions. This speculation just doesn't stand up to logic. I would be shocked if there's truth to it.

lol I’m the stubborn one??

There is nothing wrong with signing an older experienced player when needed. Do we really need another older experienced middle forward.

Our pack is already one of the oldest in the comp, under V’Landy’s ball it’s a younger man’s game in the middle.

It’s all about leg speed, quick PTB’s and working hard off the ball. Does Vaughan bring any of this??
