A decent number of the 5 million greater Sydney residents are 1st or 2nd generation immigrants, with some pretty big numbers coming each year.
If I moved to a new country I’d probably follow the local sport.
I wonder how many fans the game picks up from the new arrivals? Or how many fans are 1st generation fans (they didn’t pick up the game from mum and dad etc)?

Stuck in a repetitive cycle.

1. They overpay for middling talent, because nobody else wants to play there.
2. Then they try to promote as many juniors as possible, so that in the future they can be more competitive.
3. Sometimes the juniors path is blocked by the overpaid middling talent, so they pay them to play elsewhere to make a spot for the junior.
4. The juniors are initially cheap, so it doesn't matter that they are paying middling talent to play elsewhere.
5. Young players don't win much, and so because they don't have enough good players, they lose games, and the juniors want to play elsewhere.
6. They need to try and win games, so they overpay for middling talent (see the first step again)

The only people who will be laying the boot into Ryles will be the ones who have laid the boot into the last coach. They will probably wait a few years, but they were off Arthur's since at least 2018. That was only five years.

Do you think we’d have Gutherson instead of Iongi and RCG on the books if Brad Arthur was still the coach? If your answer is yes then it absolutely does say things about the differences between the coaches. Ricky Stuart deserves credit for the 2002 premiership. He had the Roosters playing very well that season. The Knights were just a better team than the Roosters in 2001. Murray also got a relatively average Cowboys side to a grand final against a much stronger opponent (ironically against Parramatta). Brad Arthur never achieved any upsets of that magnitude during his coaching career (although he came very close in 2021 against the Panthers).
