They all play for money, not the club, love of the game or fickle supporters. He has a limited time in the game and very limited opportunities once his career is over. Mercenary? Really? Grow up.

There is a fundamental conflict between the best interests of the club and of its players, especially under a salary cap. The players want to maximise their earnings while the clubs want to maximise the amount of playing talent they can accumulate. The main way this is achieved is by paying each player as little as possible under the salary cap.

The point is he wanted to get paid top dollar ('overs'), and the Tigers were most willing to do it. For clubs like the Tigers, if they only sign players for what they're worth, they wouldn't get close to spending the salary cap because the only players willing to sign for their market value are lower quality. So the extra cap space gets eaten up by overpaying a few stars. The top clubs have enough 'buying power' that they can limit their recruitment/retention to players willing to sign for what they're (objectively) worth and still assemble a strong squad.

Where do the Eels fit into this? Are any of the top players (let's say the top 100 in the NRL) willing to come to the Eels (or stay here) for their objective market value or will they only do so if we pay overs?
