For outside backs I would say about $750kWhat would you consider to be huge money?
I just don't think it's plausible. It was probably the absolute bottom limit of what he was worth at the time we signed him. Why would he sign so cheaply? Excited by the coach? Enthused about our start to the 2025 season? Or just so desperate not to play on the wing that he was happy to sell himself short?I thought the rumour was that we got Lomax on 600ish? Would hardly say that is huge money for someone that just played for Australia and is a goal kicker.
Well I don't think he's on as much as Lomax, but I reckon Lomax is on very big money. JAC might be on over $600k, which is the upper end of what he is worth.Wouldn't think JAC is on big money either. Suspended for a couple of rounds, injuries. Didn't seem to be too much other interest when we signed him
You did and I disagree, but I'd say the risk to clubs is overstated at least as much.I said this the other week!
This is the case for any off contract player you're trying to keep. If Drown didn't have his PO he would still be off contract and we would still presumably be trying to re-sign him. In that case we would give him an offer with a deadline. Until then we wouldn't be able to sign alternatives. If every club made a stance and removed PO it would be better for everyone. It is hard to manage the cap and future signings when you're not sure what a player will do.
There’s no well, bro. Every good player in your pathways was paid to be there, because they were in demand. Even your local kids, or the non local kids from country NSW where there’s a Panthers academy. You don’t get them just because they live near the training ground or your recruitment centre. They’re there because they’re getting paid. Otherwise some other club would pay them. Penrith lost Katoa because the Dolphins offered more. We lost Talagi because the Panthers offered more. We kept his brother because we either wouldn’t let him break contract or we made a better offer than Penrith.
@Poupou Escobar maybe you are right.
Penrith just pinched one of Brisbanes best up and coming forwards Armstrong. Perhaps the well has dried up a little out and they've gone for hot young talent. This adds to Blaize and Alamoti last year.
Agreed, and I doubt it would be more than that for Drown. It might even be less. That's the benefit (to the club). The risk to the club is in how much the PO is for. If it's overs, and the player takes it, then it's a bad outcome. If the player doesn't take the PO and either re-signs on a new deal or leaves, then the PO had zero negative impact.Understand if we are saving 100k whatever really good job to the club..
As I said, this would be the case even if Drown had no PO. He is off contract, and unless we preferred Talagi to Drown, then the youngster risked Drown re-signing and him having his path blocked. Meanwhile Penrith just lost their 6, so Talagi has much less competition over there. My gripe is that any 5/8 coming through ala Blaize will be looking for an exit asap due to the unknown of when or if he will resign.
Agreed, but we could replace him with a cheaper option and use the change to improve other positions (e.g. hooker or edge forward). We could be on the lookout for a 5/8 this may for 2026 which isn't good I would think.
That's just how it goes. It was a big ask to tell Talagi to hang around in case Drown decided to leave. Drowns PO meant it was harder to lie to Talagi about his future chances ("Mate we are f**king Dylan off at the end of 2025!") but lying to your players about your plans isn't good business. If Blaize was signed until the end of this year and Brown goes then we keep her m but now we could lose both.
Future recruitment/retention plans do rely on merkins re-signing when you want them to. The club doesn't have a lot of control over it.Bad timing or not future thinking
And then when someone provides an assessment based on the few facts we do know it's all nOw YoU'rE jUsT StAtInG yOuR oPiNiOn As FaCt! But private financial information pushed by rugby league journos is gospel. The problem is it’s being spouted as fact, then repeated as fact, reported in media as fact, then we all shake our heads when he signs with Roosters for $900k because all along the $1.2m was some bloke writing a post about how he thinks Drown might be able to get that from someone
Of course there isn't a well..
Imagine a well in the ground full of kids..
We also don't know how good he will be. Nobody does. But if he was in demand the Broncos weren't going to be able to keep him for less than market value. You have to wonder how the kid wasnt snapped up as soon as he came off contract with the Broncos.. I assume he must have had a few clubs fighting for his signature hence why it's only just got done..
Tatts and a mullet. What could go wrong?
Good signing
That’s because you’re only considering the cap & financial aspects. Work and mental capacity for the decision makers would definitely be a risk. On top of that (yes contracts and paper and all that) but if we had signed for 4 years proper rather than with options, we probably save money over the 4 years. The problem with essentially frontloading contracts is if you don’t win when they are frontloaded, you’re f**ked winning once the bill is due. That or you need to double down and have balancing front loadsYou did and I disagree, but I'd say the risk to clubs is overstated at least as much.
Less hair though.A Cesspit i wouldn't bother.
TCT you have to be a full on unicorn to post otherwise there is a meltdown on anything slightly negative or criticism of the joint.
This is where the Parramatta fan discussion is at.
Better people, posters and more importantly the banter is good quality imo.
You’re not the one getting singled out by trolls. You might think I deserve it but that’s beside the point. It’s against the rules, and the rules exist for a reason. If I break the rules I’ll be subject to their enforcement. But I’m just here for robust discussion, not to troll merkins I don’t like or find a little crew to help me gang up on somebody. There’s no hypocrisy. I’m not a victim. But if merkins are going to go out of their way to give me a hard time, they better stay within the rules.
No FFS. If there was no PO in place until Round 10 this year and he was just "off contract" since last November, we could have given him a deadline or Whatever as you say - BUT, in that time, we could also have gone out and tried to sign someone else on the market for 2026 who may be a better fit longer term at reduced salary.... As it stands, if we did the latter of what I have described above in tandem with the PO that is in place, and then he decided to activate the PO for 2026 and 2027, we potentially screw our cap by having 3 high priced halves on the books.... Like, it doesn't get any simpler than that.... It's a shit situation...If Drown didn't have his PO he would still be off contract and we would still presumably be trying to re-sign him. In that case we would give him an offer with a deadline. Until then we wouldn't be able to sign alternatives

Whatever happens Parra did the right thing...
@Poupou Escobar, for someone who typically prioritises value over hype and avoids overpaying, it’s clear you’re debating the Dylan Brown saga just for the sake of it. It’s so obvious. No FFS.
