Here’s mine; he will be the next Joey Manu. But he wasn’t in 2024 and he won’t be in 2025. I’m as sour as the next Parra supporter but I’ll concede that he is a gifted footballer.
That’s fair. Happy to see how it plays out. Either way I’m happy we didn’t outlay significant coin for the next 3 years when he won’t be a first grade 5/8’s asshole.

Do you honestly think a contract can't be modified by agreement of both parties with proper representation?
It's not about the mechanics of the contract, it's about which risks can be eliminated. Given the only risk of a PO is the club losing the option of discarding the player when his contract expires, this risk isn't eliminated by offering him an extension. It is the opposite. At least with a PO there's a chance the unwanted player will not activate it and leave. But re-signing him means he is definitely staying. Obviously if the club wants him to stay that is fine, but that's also the case if he activates the PO; a positive outcome for the club.

If his contract ended at the end of 2025 and no PO we would of had the option in June to say to Dylan do you want to extend. If he said I want to test the market then we could of said no worries. We then could of focussed on Talagi if we wanted and a selling point could of been the 5/8th position is yours in 2026. Dylan can't commit so we are putting our faith in you and not Dylan and moving on from him.
Does this make sense?
It does, but you keep making the assumption that the club (like the fans, because we are all connected now or some shit) would throw its toys out of the cot just because a player wanted to test the market instead of signing early for unders. We weren't ever going to prioritise Talagi over Drown, so it's a moot point. Drown is still twice the player, and if he left we would only have one spine player with more than 40 games.
Alternatively we could of chased anything available at Nov 1. Most the good players are snapped up fast. Currently we have to sit and wait.
Dylan Brown hasn't been snapped up yet. This time two years ago we were still waiting for Moses to shit or get off the pot as well.

For a player like Drown, that would almost be as stupid as the current contract.
When he last re-signed he was 22 years old, the best defensive half in the game, and had already played 82 NRL games and four straight finals series, including a grand final. He was the perfect candidate for a nine year contract. And off the field the club and his team mates love him, a lot more than the fans do.

You’re completely dismissing the possibility of a change in direction (or coaching staff) across 9 years of nrl where the player with a PO is no longer wanted. It’s an absurd contract. Just like DCE’s and Taumolo’s long term contracts. For someone that’s meant to analyse risk for a living I’m surprised you’ve either dismissed or not even considered this eventuality.
I am obviously assuming the conditions under which he signed the contract would persist. A new coach doesn't change those conditions, in fact we would have recruited the coach to fit with the club's strategic vision. The club is bigger than the coach, and under the new constitution it is stable enough that we can finally implement a vision longer than a single chairman's tenure.

I'm aware many fans don't like Dylan Brown, and they are really really hoping that Ryles doesn't like him either. But Drown was at the club before Ryles, and he probably has better relationships with his team mates and the front office staff. We know he works hard, and he is the type of player who can fit into any game plan. Every coach needs merkins who run and tackle well.

In the case of a contract registered with the NRL, that would become a new contract.

I'll take your word for it since I've never sat through the process with the NRL.
But I struggle to see why both parties submitting an agreed request to (for example) delete clause 17 wouldn't be allowed. Or clauses 38, 19 and 66 (a, ii) - it would be a simple modification. [Those clauses refer to nothing real, just an example]

You're probably right, I was just unaware they had published rules around it that could inform us of such.

IMO, in that instance we were lucky. I’m glad we passed on Talagi as I just don’t see a quality half for at least 3 years. I thought he could have been useful as a centre or full back until I saw his defensive reads and technique.

Here’s a Ronald McDonald special prediction…Talagi will be the next Luke Brooks. We don’t want that anywhere near Parra.

I agree Blaize wouldn't be much chop this year. In this scenario I guess it would be 2026 we'd be blooding him there full-time.
He may flop but atleast we have the option to consider. With the PO we lost that option.

I can see why Dogs let Samrani and Katugo go. Joash might be the one who bites them on arse. The 2nd rower whilst has potential has the worse hands I've ever seen. Unsure if they can iron that out of him.I get impression this is the reason dogs let him go.

I think Kautoga and Samrani will both have roles to play during the year.
Let's not forget first game of the season, humid conditions, match fitness and conditioning lacking.
Kautoga absolutely needs to hold the ball first. Damaging enough. Hold it.
Samrani I like as can play centre or back row so can add that versatility. I think he played the whole match..
There are footballers in both these boys.
Papalli I'm a fan of. His turn of speed, jink, swerve,.nice ball playing as well could be a great addition to the bench able to play a number of roles.
Although Ionghi probably has 1st crack at fullback, Papalli will constantly be putting pressure on him...he's a good one

My only concern with Joash is his lack of size. He looked tiny out there.

Samrani reminds me of Ben Smith, although Smith was more agile pre knee injuries. Samoans made a few poor reads but there might be enough there for him to be a decent backup.

Yet you have stated previously that you couldn’t give a shit if he stays or goes but once again are arguing for the minority just for the sake of it.

No with the PO we lost the option to get rid of him after 2024. A one year contract with PO is completely different to a two year contract, so it’s wrong to assume he would’ve been happy with a two year contract and no PO, on similar money. The player’s manager knew he would potentially be worth a lot more in 2025, which is why they didn’t want a multi year contract. The PO was just there in case he shat the bed or got injured in 2024. From the club’s perspective, all we gave up with the PO was the option to get rid of him after 2024, something we didn’t really value with a talented 19 year old.
