Well, it has been very obvious to all that we should be targeting edge forwards, but no one is available at the moment for next year. Now that David Fifita is supposedly on the market, would he be an ideal target for Ryles? So far, from what I’ve observed, he tends to focus on youth. If you're around 30 years old, he usually won’t want to retain or sign you unless you're bringing significant elite-level value, like Moses, or offering something the team clearly lacks, like Josh Addo-Carr’s pace and finishing. He might also consider you if you're really good value in terms of money. Otherwise, he won’t waste his time, just look at how Matterson and Cartwright are being used.

David Fifita is 25, so ideally he should be heading into his prime years now. He has the potential to be elite when on form, fills the massive void in the second row, and could even be decent value for money if the Titans cover some of his contract this year and next. The obvious concerns are his attitude and defence. But with the lack of options Ryles has, is this the type of move where he bites the bullet and backs himself to get good value out of him?

f**k yes I’d take Fifita. If he gets motivation right from a good coach, f**k he’ll be good.

I can’t see Des being too many 25 year olds cup of tea

Big yes.

Guymer and Kautoga will improve next year, but even so they'll still be the worst back row pairing in the comp if that's what we roll out.
Obviously need to be cautious of the $$$ but I think we need to make a play at Fifita

Is Guymer even a second rower.. doesn't seem to have the agility. Defensively he may be ok but attacking wise i don't get what you're seeing.

Titans aren't going to take the cap hit to move him on
No one knows if the Tits will cough anything up given the fractured relationship he appears to have with Des who they see as their long term coach.

If our glorious recruitment leaders don’t at least have shot at an elite backrower, then are they serious about their intent to strengthen the roster

Do you play him on an edge or as a middle?

He definitely has the agility. What he lacks is the power to make a difference in attack. But the priority at nearly every position is defence. If you have an edge forward like Guymer in the team you just use him on shift plays, often as a decoy. If you had Fifita on the other side you would play to him more, either giving him early ball or creating plays to isolate him on a defender. Like we did with Lane when he was good.
