Of course coaching is a factor in player development but additionally Talagi is also a year older and had another offseason, so he was always going to improve....
FWIW I think some of these kids are being brought through too early and to an extent I think Galvin set a difficult and dangerous precedent. After 2 spoons and with injuries, Tigers were in a tough spot and after an impressive preseason, Benji threw Galvin in at 19, way too early. To his credit, Galvin hit the ground running and played well but he still has a lot to learn and isnt the full rounded player yet and its an open question of whether he will be able to learn and develop his game under the pressure of 1st grade and $1M expectations, or whether he could have developed his full game with a season or two in reggies that he would have had at a stronger club.
In teh Tigers game v Parra last year which the Tigers won and (I think) it was Talagi debut(?) and you could tell he could play but was found out in defence particularly. Simply too early.
At the end of the day he is earning best part of $1M in his second year of first grade so he doesnt care, but the current wave of 18-19 year old hot shots (read TDS) see what happened to Galvin and think why should I wait. Im that guy now.
Its an ongoing issue for the Tigers because we are still relatively crap and have no depth and will need to lean on juniors in coming years. Latu is roughly the same age as Galvin but the injuries he has had, and playing second fiddle to Galvin for that year may (I hope) put him in good stead as it possibly delayed his introduction as a first grade half and he may be better developed for it. The test of whether Benji thinks the same or has learnt this lesson will be whether Makasini gets thrown into first grade this year once he turns 18. Im hoping the signing of Taylan May will delay Makasini's debut.
