You can put whatever weight you want on that cost, but even if prior to them signing the chance of him staying were slim (even perhaps already zero), evidently the chances of him staying after they’d signed were actually even more absolute zero than already were. You have this player.
He doesn’t like your coach.
He thinks about leaving.
Club decision point - do we focus on coach or player?
Club decision - let’s change the equation and see what happens.
Equation change - let’s sign these other players.
The original player hadn’t actually left up to that point in time.
Some time after signing those players, the original player requests release and this time the club says ok.
