Yeah sure, but the coach has to take some sort of credit for play style and philosophy.

Would the panthers have achieved the same sort of success under anthony griffin?
Nobody said the coach doesn't deserve credit. Just that the quality of the roster is most important. This is why Cleary won zero premierships in his first 15 years and four in his last 5 years.

It’s sound reasoning but I’ve come to think it probably isn’t what is happening in practice. At least not in terms of affecting contract value.
You can’t think of it in terms of 2 equal clubs. What Pou is suggesting is say Smugs were offering 2 years @ $1m a year and Tigers offered 2 years @ $950k a year plus a PO for extra year @ $1m. That backup guarantee might be enough to convince him to give up the $100k difference on first 2 years.
But I think practically it’s more likely both teams offer same amount per year and one team offers additional year as PO as feel good offering with all parties knowing that there’s zero chance the actually PO is exercised unless the player goes to the Josh Schuster school of fitness and desire
Don't think of it as two equal clubs, think of it as the same club in two separate timelines.

Timeline A
Player: "The Dogs offered an extra $80k. if you can match it, I'll stay.
Club: "Okay"

Timeline B
Player: "The Dogs offered an extra $80k. if you can match it, I'll stay.
Club: "That's the best we can do. How about a player option?"

He made 5 grand finals in a row and won 4 premierships while the team was pillaged every season because of the salary cap. Don’t be disingenuous. We made one grand final and the salary cap owned us so hard we haven’t even made the finals since.
That's because Gould built an amazing production line to replace the lost players, just like he's building at Canterbury.

Meanwhile our pathways took years to recover after Covid because we don't have any private funding. We are relying on the PLC to fund our program.

I think you will find in 2019 Ivan Cleary returned to the club and Gus Gould had to be moved on.
Gould didn't 'have' to do anything. His work was finished at Penrith. The system was set up and the money was spent. Then he left to do the same thing elsewhere. He follows the money, which is why he was never an option at Parra.
Ivan then had to spend 12 months dismantling Gus's roster.

James Maloney - who still had a year to run on his contract so Ivan could promote Jarome Luai who came in and play in that 5/8 role from 2020.

Maloney was a Gus Gould signing who was brought in to swap with Matt Moylan at end of 2017 in the Griffin era on 800k a season. Obviously Ivan felt that money was better spent elsewhere in 2020.

DWZ - Had a contract until 2020 signed in 2017 when Gus/Griffin were at the helm - Ivan Cleary came in and moved him on mid-season 2019 where he ended up at the d

A rookie winger named Brian To'o who Ivan brought through and developed was a replacement.

Waqa Blake - Gus signed him on a 5 year deal in October 2018

Less then 9 months later he is running around in a Parramatta Jersey.

Ivan brought in a rookie named Stephen Crichton to replace Waqa Blake who turned out okay i suppose. Meanwhile what happened to Waqa's career.

.
RCG - Gus signs him to a 6 year deal in 2018 - 18 months later Ivan Cleary moves him on so JFH & Moses Leota to take the place of the bookends.

Api Koroisau - was bought back by Ivan Cleary at end of 2019 after Gus tossed Api out in 2015 along with Ivan because Gus rated James Segeyaro higher.

Well if tune into this video below 4min 20 seconds in you will get the background on why Gus made a mess of this and Ivan got punted in 2015.

And the final sucker punch

Ivan/Penrith lost Burton, Kikau, Crichton all moving on due to salary cap constraints & all ironically signed by Gus & the Bulldogs who still haven't won a final yet.

Meanwhile Ivan has just been coaching Penrith to more premierships without them they lost Burton in 2021, Kikau in 2022, Crichton in 2023 and were still winning comps in 2024.
All those players you think Cleary 'brought through' were only available because of the pathways Gould set up. Most of them even debuted under Griffin ffs.

Glorious take down of the biggest disingenuous fraud on LU.

Never debates in good faith, moves the goal posts constantly and loves walking down both sides of the street. Time for him to have another holiday, not sure what his Pou Dags will do with him gone though.
The following players debuted under Anthony Griffin:

Edwards
Luai
Cleary
Fisher-Harris
Leota
Kikau

The ones who got their debut under Cleary were Yeo, Crichton, Martin and To'o. And they were already at the club before Cleary got there, just like the ones who debuted under Griffin were at the club before him. These players weren't recruited or even invented out of thin air by the coaches. Because junior development isn't the coach's job. There is a massive expensive staff paid for with Packer dollars to do all that stuff. The coach's job is to coach the NRL squad.

But go on and whinge some more about goalposts.

Your wrong on this one

I think you will find in 2019 Ivan Cleary returned to the club and Gus Gould had to be moved on.

James Maloney - who still had a year to run on his contract so Ivan could promote Jarome Luai who came in and play in that 5/8 role from 2020.
He couldn't have done it if Luai wasn't ready for first grade. Just like how Cleary was able to give debuts to DWZ, Blake and RCG.
Maloney was a Gus Gould signing who was brought in to swap with Matt Moylan at end of 2017 in the Griffin era on 800k a season. Obviously Ivan felt that money was better spent elsewhere in 2020.
Just like Parra punting Norman when Dylan Brown was ready for first grade around the same time.
DWZ - Had a contract until 2020 signed in 2017 when Gus/Griffin were at the helm - Ivan Cleary came in and moved him on mid-season 2019 where he ended up at the d

A rookie winger named Brian To'o who Ivan brought through and developed was a replacement.
Just like the rookie winger DWZ that Cleary 'brought through' (From where? Who the f**k knows where young players come from!) in 2014 during his first stint at the club.

You mean the same Waqa Blake that Cleary debuted in 2015?
RCG - Gus signs him to a 6 year deal in 2018 - 18 months later Ivan Cleary moves him on so JFH & Moses Leota to take the place of the bookends.
Are you talking about the same RCG who got his NRL debut in 2015 when Ivan Cleary was the coach? Gee that Cleary is good at pulling talented youngsters out of a hat!
Api Koroisau - was bought back by Ivan Cleary at end of 2019 after Gus tossed Api out in 2015 along with Ivan because Gus rated James Segeyaro higher.
Or was he just cheaper? Do you think they got rid of Luai because they rated Blaize Talagi higher? Or do market forces and the salary cap perhaps mean you're better off not having the best player at every position?
And the final sucker punch
lol

You've gone off half cocked once again my boy. Don't ever play this game with me or this will happen to you again.

You keep saying that but
Ivan Cleary spent 6 seasons at the Warriors.
He made the finals 4/6 years. INCLUDING a grand final and 2 prelims. It would of been 5 if they were not deducted 4 points.
Find me a stat that shows a more succesful period in the Warriors history....
They were hardly a small club. They made the finals three times in the five years before it, including two prelims, a grand final and a minor premiership. The Warriors aren't just a one team town; they're a one team country. Their junior rep teams are f**king awesome.
He also had the Tigers finish 9th. Thats pretty good for the Tigers.
Fair point.

You are an imbecile. You literally only exist to attack, antagonise and troll parramatta fans.

you need help.

I’m sure your coterie of dopes will support you, but they only support you because they enjoy your attack of parramatta fans as they think it validates their arguments

they don’t realise you mean nothing that you write - you just pick something antagonistic and troll away.

How the f**k are you feeling 'antagonised' talking about the f**king Panthers you dopey merkin. Why can't you just have a rational discussion ABOUT A CLUB YOU DON'T EVEN SUPPORT without complaining you are being trolled?
