I do agree with you I just with our recruitment team had better foresight or wish we had some decent outside backs ready to be promoted from out pathways.
If you’re looking for outside backs with potential anywhere between Harold Matts and NSW Cup, you’re looking in the wrong place.
Take the example of Casey McLean. In 2023, aged 17, he played the whole Harold Matts season. The next year (aged 18) he didn’t play SG Ball at all. Instead he started the year in Flegg, moved to reserve grade, and finished the year in the NRL.
Lesser players will follow a similar path. Wenisini played reserve grade and NRL the year he turned 19 (2021). The year before that he was in SG Ball (back when it was still u18s). For outside backs, the jump from 17s/18s happens very quickly, if it’s going to happen at all.
What this means is to not worry about the likes of Farrugia and Johansson. The next big thing (of outside backs) most likely played Harold Matts this year. For us that means Bloomfield and McCloskey. They could end up doing nothing, but it’s too soon to write them off. It’s especially too soon to say they won’t be ready for years. They are 17 ffs. Most of the top outside backs were at least playing reserve grade at 18, which means they are probably good enough to be backups for the NRL team. There’s isn’t exactly an intermediate grade, so NSW/QLD Cup is where backups generally play.
