Bronson Xerri’s fragile truce with Bulldogs now hinges on positional switch
It’s the positional sticking point that will decide whether Bronson Xerri remains at Canterbury or runs for the exit - and the tipping point could come when NSW Cup team lists are named.Canterbury star Bronson Xerri has private fears about whether he can adapt and succeed after being shifted to right centre.
Xerri remains bitterly frustrated at being moved from the left edge amid ongoing speculation he will seek a release from the Bulldogs.
The fragile truce between the Bulldogs and Xerri could ignite if he is retained at right centre in the NSW Cup.
Xerri was planning on walking into the club on Sunday morning and asking for an immediate release.
He had even worked out how he was going to tell his teammates.
But Sunday morning breakfast with Canterbury general manager Phil Gould eased tensions although Xerri still doesn’t regard himself as a right centre.
It is understood the Bulldogs coaching staff is urging Xerri to work hard on his new position but the Canterbury star is reluctant to move to the other side of the field.
But Xerri thinks he could be wasted on the other edge.
The club’s refusal to offer him a contract extension and his dumping from the side to play the Raiders in Canberra on Thursday night, has only added to Xerri’s disgruntled demeanour.
Xerri was told late last week that he was being axed to play NSW Cup for Canterbury who take on Canberra on Saturday in Belconnen.
Teammates are urging Xerri to stay at the club and fight his way back into the NRL but it is likely the drama will resurface if Xerri continues being selected in NSW Cup.
