Very sad to see Harris being forced to bow out in such a manner
He must be absolutely filthy he wasn't picked for the World Cup now, considering the selectors rested him for the Ashes, only for his position in the test side to be in doubt during the tour matches before he sustained that final injury which led to his retirement. After all, he did make his name in the ODI side in 2009 before playing tests a year later.
Very good career. 113 wickets @ 23.53 are stats most fast bowlers on the international stage these days would take any day of the week. Like Shane Bond, we will never know how he could've gone had he remained injury free and also, as other had said, had he appeared in the national side earlier (Bond debuted for NZ at 26, Harris for Australia at 30). Most of our fast bowlers started out wearing the Baggy Green in their early 20s, such as McGrath/Gillespie/Kasprowicz/Flemming/Lee etc. As I said, had Harris remained injury free and his talent spotted earlier by the selectors, it would've been interesting to see how he really could've gone had he played in a team with bowlers like McGrath or Warne building sustained pressure and tying down batsmen from the other bowling end.
Reflecting on his short international career, the three Harris highlights that will stand out for me are:
1) That absolute jaffa he bowled Cook with at the WACA
2) The delivery he bowled Dravid out at the WACA in 2012. Dravid was aptly called 'The Wall" for good reason and although his best years were behind him, it was still took an absolute ripper of a delivery from Harris
3) Most memorable moment would be those final two wickets in the dying overs of the final test of last years South African tour to win us the series. It was 35 degrees that day, Harris knee was completely stuffed, our other bowlers were inconsistent and a controversial review that went in South Africa's favour deflated our spirits until Harris conjured up the energy for one more spell which proved to be the difference
