watching any live ashes action whilst your over there JJ?

Hoping to get to Trent Bridge (in Europe for a couple of weeks first), as I'll be nearby (Lincoln) for a couple of weeks - we'll see though, lots of ducks to line up.

Last week was remarkably hot (remember I am a Kiwi) in London, no doubt it'll be cooler and greyer once the Ashes start...

Glad I visited Lords, timely given the two most recent names on the visiting dressing room were Boult and Williamson - fair chance Hazlewood and Smith are there next (had thought Harris, such a shame, what a quality bowler - sorry Haynetrain, laughable to compare him to Clark)

What a shame, not only a career cut short but also a massive blow to this Ashes series for Australia.

113 wickets in 27 Tests. Pretty remarkable effort given his career was dogged by injuries.

Just a shame that he didn't come to the fold earlier and enjoy a longer Test career.

Seems like a genuine, regular knockabout sort of fella as well.

Enjoy retirement Ryno.

Harris was better, but it is a similar case, emerge late, couple of good years before injuries catch up.

Similarly, Stuart Clark is a top bloke from the one time I met him. Smart bowler also

You probably won't ever find such a similar career or a better comparison in your life,no idea what your on about, both bowlers were about as good as each other.(Clark bowled against better batsmen who were in there primes as well)

There both line and length bowlers in the Mcgrath fashion and there stats are basically the same, they are probably long lost brothers

Stuart Clark 1

Sorry, I don't see Harris as a line and length bounce bowler like McGrath at all, I see his stats are similar to Clark's, but that's all imo - Harris is a different bowler, and imo a better one... if there's one place left in a team and the two choices are Harris and Clark, that's a pretty easy decision imo... Harris is a better bowler - that's not disrespectful to Clark, just my opinion based on watching them both

Ryan Harris is a line and length bowler like McGrath?

My whole life has been a lie!

Clark was good, but Harris was a class above imo. I don't care what the stats say (they aren't as relevant over a short career). I'm basing my opinion on the good old fashioned eye test.

Saying Harris is a class above Clark isn't common sense, that's just plain overrating Harris, anyways at the end of the day they were both good bowlers and more importantly much better than Trent Boult

Well McGrath was a line and length bowler yet arguably Australia's finest fast bowler

To me Clark is to McGrath like what MacGill was to Warne. Except MacGill got opportunities while Warne was around.

Harris is a great bowler no doubt and will be missed. He took the final wicket with 27 balls to spare to beat South Africa and despite having a great record I always felt he was the unlucky one when it came to bowling well without the true wicket reward.

so a stats worshiper like yourself is ignoring the stats when it suits ?

how convenient

I actually prefer Harris over S. Clark despite their numbers being similar, just felt he's a bit more consistent and has that extra bit of pace. If both were available today at full fitness and at their peaks I'd take Harris for sure.

Both were fine bowlers though and deserved longer careers.
Funny how guys like Broad in comparison never seem to go away.

Very sad to see Harris being forced to bow out in such a manner

He must be absolutely filthy he wasn't picked for the World Cup now, considering the selectors rested him for the Ashes, only for his position in the test side to be in doubt during the tour matches before he sustained that final injury which led to his retirement. After all, he did make his name in the ODI side in 2009 before playing tests a year later.

Very good career. 113 wickets @ 23.53 are stats most fast bowlers on the international stage these days would take any day of the week. Like Shane Bond, we will never know how he could've gone had he remained injury free and also, as other had said, had he appeared in the national side earlier (Bond debuted for NZ at 26, Harris for Australia at 30). Most of our fast bowlers started out wearing the Baggy Green in their early 20s, such as McGrath/Gillespie/Kasprowicz/Flemming/Lee etc. As I said, had Harris remained injury free and his talent spotted earlier by the selectors, it would've been interesting to see how he really could've gone had he played in a team with bowlers like McGrath or Warne building sustained pressure and tying down batsmen from the other bowling end.

Reflecting on his short international career, the three Harris highlights that will stand out for me are:

1) That absolute jaffa he bowled Cook with at the WACA
2) The delivery he bowled Dravid out at the WACA in 2012. Dravid was aptly called 'The Wall" for good reason and although his best years were behind him, it was still took an absolute ripper of a delivery from Harris
3) Most memorable moment would be those final two wickets in the dying overs of the final test of last years South African tour to win us the series. It was 35 degrees that day, Harris knee was completely stuffed, our other bowlers were inconsistent and a controversial review that went in South Africa's favour deflated our spirits until Harris conjured up the energy for one more spell which proved to be the difference
