The Roar:
by Scott Pryde

What is Mary saying at halftime?
No, genuinely. I don’t have the answers.

Playing the snake charming violin and putting his players to sleep, perhaps. Or, I don’t know, using some men in black style shenanigans to wipe their memory of the game plan which worked well in the first half?

It just doesn’t make sense, the difference in how the Dragons have played in the first half, and the second half, over the last fortnight as the club fell to both Parramatta last weekend and New Zealand last night.

It was somehow worse against the Warriors, even if because it was only the second week of it happening.

The forwards were rolling during the first half, Jai Field’s impact was obvious, and Matt Dufty was solid.

But what followed was awful as all that went out the back window.

One interesting tidbit picked up from the game (and for the record, I think it continues to show how McGregor fails to understand the needs of his roster and squad, which has been a major thorn in the side of the Dragons over the last two years) was that just a single interchange was used in the first half.

Sure, the Red V have some big-minute forwards, but the lack of rotation meant that, in the last 10 or 15 minutes of the match, McGregor had all four bench players on the park, while players like Paul Vaughan, Tyson Frizell and James Graham, who should all be on the park in the crunch stages of any footy game, found themselves exhausted and having a breather on the pine.

That roster management makes it little surprise the Dragons are continuing to struggle in the second halves of games, but some of their fundamental skills and the like seem to drop away in the second 40.

That, frankly, may not be the worst thing in the world from a season management perspective, given the club obviously haven’t peaked yet, but with three straight losses and realistically only one super impressive performance against a hapless Bulldogs in 2019, there is a lot for the Dragons to work on in the coming weeks, as they drop from the NRL’s top eight.

The fact Paul McGregor has already been re-signed by the Red V is a concern. A big one.

So the media’s turning on you Waterboy

And the Board will turn

But don’t worry - you can drown your sorrows with your favourites who’ve brought you down

I’m glad you done this Linespeed, I tried to but had trouble.
The author as most would know is a passionate Dragons fan so let’s hope that this is the start of the press putting the heat on the coach & club. I never thought I’d say this but maybe we need News Limited to climb aboard.

Call the garbage company ( Bingo ? ) that wanted to buy the Dragons before it was ‘ handed ‘ to the Gordon’s and then can the venture and start the Saints once again . Perhaps then some truly success oriented , financial savvy businessmen will put their hands up to form a new board , to put the Dragons back to where they should be - the top of the NRL tree.

This is NOT directed at the players themselves , whom have been hindered at every turn by diabolical coaching and a board that is and has been in self - destruct mode for a number of years . Change at the very top is the only way out of this constant bleeding of what was such a proud and prestigious club .

The current board members of St.George Illawarra have so much to answer for .

Do you know how contracts work?
They just re-signed the muppet for 2 years after this season which isn't even half way through. As if they would fire him with 2.5 years to go on his contract a few weeks after extending him!

There is no way Mary gets fired.
And just to annoy everyone on the forum Dragons will lose 6 in a row and then come home strong to finish about 8th or 9th which will be considered a success after all the injuries.

The people in charge of this club DO NOT care about success. They are just happy to exist and keep the gravy train rolling along. Its pathetic. They actually laugh about it with mates! There are people on the payroll that do absolutely nothing.
It's corruption.

But, to be fair, Mary has progressed. He pioneered the repeat, May premiers/second half of the season fadeout but he has now refined that to a repeat, dominant first half of a game- second half fadeout.

I look forward with interest to his next pioneering achievement.

Struggling to find positives at this club right now. Hunt was the one shining light and then dropped the ball, which is an honest mistake, but then smiled like a cheshire cat because he was only thinking about himself, and not the team.

Tell me the culture of this club is not rotten. The complete lack of desire to defend the try line. The selection errors are to a point where they are so amateur and even Mary's friends in the media are left bewildered. The injuries, the signs of broken players after round 9. The rolling over to the powers that be in regards to refereeing and the De Belin situation. We haven't played at home in a month and now we are taking our next home game to whoop whoop. It just goes on...

I know winning changes a lot but they just seem to do more harm than good to our future these days. At least the train will be derailed before Origin hits this year.

Gripe done.

The CEO has asked him what is the plan for next week. McIdiot came back with a new approach, cut and paste.

Can YOU stop the choke Waterboy?

How Wayne Bennett rid the Dragons of 'chokers tag'
By Ben Creagh for PlayersVoice
Just that week one in the finals in 2010, getting that chokers tag off was a pressure release. The media and critics can shut up for a week.
Of course, the chokers tag comes up again before the major semi-final; you’re playing for a grand final, block it out, we’re not chokers.
Big game, win by a point and we’re in a grand final.
Wayne brought a sports pysch with him, he was big for us. Block out the outside noise, focus on yourself, points, what you need to do well. The noise can be so loud it can overtake your thoughts in games.
There might have been some older players who played with Browny and there might have been some mateship there that might have caused issues in the team. I never saw that. I don’t believe that was a problem or an issue.
It was getting rid of that chokers tag, beating Manly, beating the Tigers, and winning our first grand final that was special.
It was my first grand final but I’m an older player by then, getting on in my career. I understand these opportunities don’t come along too often and I know a lot of players in that team have a similar feeling and you want to make the most of it.
We were behind 8-6 at halftime. Not the best first half and I personally had a shocker – I think I dropped two balls, it was really slippery.
We didn’t play great. Wayne came in at halftime and he didn’t say too much – just, ‘You boys hold the ball, complete your sets, you’ll win this game’. Just so simple.
There’s a belief. His calmness. He’s not screaming the lights out in the room. Just said what he said so calmly – didn’t rant and rave, and walked back out.

QED Waterboy??

Once you get about a dozen flaws in your coaching sorted?

And select the right 17 on form rather than favouritism

Otherwise walk......

I am just wondering if the maestro used to sit in the corner of the classroom wearing a dunces cap , when he attended the Higgabottoms School for Supercoaches ?

Bennett wanted to sign for 5 years and the board only gave him 3 and yet we keep giving extensions to McGregor like he is the only coach available. These days the Dragons don't get a lot of media coverage which allows McGregor to fly under the radar.
When Bennett was our Coach I watched every game expecting to win.
When Price was Coach I just hoped we didn’t get smashed.
With Mary as Coach I still watch every game hoping not to lose .
That’s my summary .
