Paul McGregor is excited for 2020, saying that he is his own harshest critic and that the Dragons have what it takes to bounce back from a disastrous season.

St George Illawarra ended their 2019 campaign with a win over the Titans on the Gold Coast on Saturday night but finished second last on the NRL table after a horror season blighted by injuries and absentees.

The under-pressure Dragons coach will be subject to an external review after McGregor approached coaching legend Phil Gould to appraise St George Illawarra's football operation.

Gould, a two-time premiership-winning coach and NSW's most successful State of Origin coach, will give an outsider's perspective to McGregor and Dragons CEO Brian Johnston.

But while McGregor may be under heavy fire from some sections of the Dragons' supporters, he is also looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding after a forgettable season.

"I think [I'm most excited] just to learn from what didn't work this year and grow. And as a group of men understand that we've got to be accountable for the season we had. In life you get obstacles in your way and you've just got to make sure that you work through them. This year has just been one after the other," he said.

"So we look forward to the guys having a break and getting away. We've got some very good players in this team. We just need to make sure that we attack it, we come back as rookies and start all over again.

"I'm a person that starts early and finishes late and works hard on the process to get a result. But I choose to do my role. I enjoy my role. I've got a playing group that I have the respect of that work hard. We just didn't get the results we needed this year.

"Personally, when I have time to reflect, I'm the harshest critic of myself. I don't need anyone else throwing it at me. I square myself up regularly and look for ways I need to fix things and change as well. I think there are plenty of lessons to learn out of this year. They'll all come out in the next couple of weeks.

"I think you go through moments like this year in every year of your career. Obviously this year is a year that we've been out of finals contention for a very long time and that's obviously fresh. To have that happen on a weekly basis has been a challenge. You've got to really understand that the process is important, you look at what you've got, not what you're waiting for to come back is something that we've got to be better at. Pre-season is pretty important to get everything right as well, I don't think we got our pre-season right last year."

Meanwhile, the draw for the women's NRL competition has been released, with the Dragons to open their season against Brisbane on Sunday. The match will be played before the Parramatta-Brisbane NRL elimination final at Bankwest Stadium.

The process isn’t important when you come second last, players are playing worse, you have the team you want and you blow it and play like merkins. Note he has already foreshadowed the outcome of the review, rendering it useless.

They waited until he made the finals. Smart club. Wish we followed one as smart.
And Ricky has showed more in his coaching style and promoting lower grade and young players and has rebuilt Canberra and willing to change and shake things up. Not a fair comparison as has been coaching for 20 years. McGregor wont be coaching that long in the NRL unless at the Dragons.
Ricky's stint at Parramatta was poor and his last couple of years underachieved but is not scared to wield the axe literally.
Sticky's only problem to start with was his sides lack of defence mentality.
Has won a premiership with a squad given to him but has made the top 4 a few times too and Week 3 of the finals.
Mary never has
Ricky was under huge pressure this year and responded.
Finally the penny has dropped at Canberra in regards to their defence, once he got that right they have always been a pretty good attacking side.
Has created an us V the world culture and mentality whilst always talking about enbracing the loyal fans.
Our club thinks our fans are a bunch of whining ning nongs who need to get more behind the club and always support their decisions.

Exactly. How can an arms length independant review be conducted when you get one of your mates, mentors who publicly talks about what he is going to review.
I am still believing and hoping that what is currently said publicly (it baffles me why all this stuff is being played ouit in the media) is not the way it is going to go down behind closed doors and a full review of everything will be done and properly.
Cmon players open up and tell the truth. You guys cant play anymore under this bloke.

He couldn't be too harsh otherwise he'd realise he's shit and has lost the support & confidence of the players & team. Walk you Moron!

Yeah but it’s canberra full of fat cat bludging public servants who expect mediocrity in everything they do.

Fortnightly committee meetings to purchase a packet of environmentally sound paper clips. 2 months off for transgender ferret studies for promotion to class 17 tax office concierge.

46% to them is like 75% to us in the private sector ...who have to eat what we kill.

Plus who cares.

Ricky accused international refs for cheating in their hotel foyer. Imbecile. Most people can’t stand him.
Was a very very good player though.

I'm a Public Servant

Reports that ex Wigan coach Shaun Wane says he is ready to coach us.
Typical dragons will say no to him.

The man with the best coaching record in England has put his hand up to save St George Illawarra.

The Dragons are poised to hold a review headed by former Blues coach Phil Gould that may well decide the fate of embattled coach Paul McGregor.

But former Wigan coach Shaun Wane has jumped the gun, hiring an Australian agent and declaring himself ready, willing and able to take over the coaching job at the Big Red V.

Wane has a great reputation in England since taking over the reins at Wigan from current Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire in 2012.

He won one minor premiership, one Challenge Cup, three grand finals and one World Club Challenge.

He walked away from the club last year for a break and is currently doing some part time work with Scotland Rugby Union.

Wane has signed up with one of the most powerful management groups in Australian rugby league - SFX - which already has several NRL coaches on its books.

The group is believed to have made an informal approach to the Dragons telling them that Wane is keen to take on the coaching job at the Big Red V

Only won 3 english super league titles, not at the same level as 3 coal mining titles!
This another man I would like to see have a go at the Dragons for 2020/2021!

He's over qualified, achieved too much success and probably has too much influence in attracting potential Pommie talent to our club.
Management would never consider that as being an alternative to being a good bloke, enjoys a beer or 20, being good mates with Gus and the media, Illawarra old boy & number 1 in the pigs trough pecking order.

Yes, This “process” he speaks so highly of has failed him so many times, to cling onto it wreaks of a disordered belief system.

It’s a bit like Hitler in his crumbling bunker telling the last of his loyal commanders what to do with massive army groups...that simply don’t exist anymore.

Paul, the fekking Red Army is a few blocks away and some words of hope now isnt going to change the clubs prospects under your somewhat deranged dictatorship.

Find a sub and head to Argentina while you can.

I love the line
"we come back as rookies and start all over again"
This is the problem you Arrogant, Condescending excuse for a coach.
You've been a rookie for six bloody years & yet you still haven't learned anything.
Just go away.

What is concerning me at this point in time is that there have been a couple of posts suggesting that it is he - Paul McGregor who is running the show , something that I find unbelievable . Surely it is the hierarchy of the J.V. calling the shots ?

This brings us to the question - just what is actually happening down WIN way and just how much influence does each party of the amalgamation actually have ?

I fear the truth of this matter .

Nail on the head, not a first or second year but 6 years a total and utter failure and nothing will change it, if you haven’t figured it out by now you boofhead you never will.

It’s obvious that McIdiot cannot and will not see reason with regards his untenable position as coach.

What I find most amazing is a thread with 590 pages wanting his sacking. Doesn’t that say it all?

I like the rumblings of this Wigan guy. Trouble is, the money is all locked away with the Illawarra faction and they love McIdiot.

Im probably the biggest and last remaining Mary fan as up untill I heard this news I believe Mary has been our best option as coach.. Shaun Wane is now our best option. it's time to move on Mary. I thank him for his efforts, I believe in 2014/15 he saved us from the spoon, an accomplishment he may never get recognition for.. Shaun wane, after doing some further research on this guy, im certain this guy will take us places. Hope he gets signed asap

THIS IS IT !!!!!!!

ONLY THE PLAYERS CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

All that’s heard from the players these days is that Marys done nothing wrong, except perhaps Tyson who continues to deny earlier reports.

What they don’t accept is that Mary is supposed to bring as many of them as possible to optimum every week.

Even allowing for injuries and players out etc, all of the players, most of the time, those out on field, they have played very poorly in comparison to their ability. In fact, they’ve have got worse.

So he’s a truly appalling communicator. Very low grade of interpersonal relationships where it actually counts.

This is why, if he stays, it’s 2 more years of garbage footy.

I mean at least he knows further failure is coming and he can spend a lot of the off season drafting excuses. At least it’s something in his “control” he keeps banging on about hopelessly.

Then he can submit these to Gus for review.

He’s in meltdown denial, bj and the board are his protectors. They facilitate this sad state of affairs. Oblivious to fact and try to shut down dissent.

Time to look for alternative representation in the nrl for a couple of years.

Titans or North effing Queensland.

Shane Warne or Shaun Wane...who cares.
