In this day and age, it’s becoming increasingly common for teams to take a punt on a reformed player who has a difficult past. The Broncos charity with Matt Lodge, and the Dragons effort in turning the life of Big Russell Packer around come to mind.
Taking on a player with a criminal past is a huge risk for a club. They risk their reputation, sponsorship and a lashing from the leftist media and PC police. Given this, I think clubs should be given salary cap exemptions for taking on players with difficult or criminal pasts.
It is the games duty to reform the lives of these men and to support them in the way they are best able to respond to - by playing rugby league. This would encourage clubs to take on men and assist them on their redemptive journeys.
Who knows how many lives we could change?
What do we all think?
