Salary Cap Relief

It's pro rata as the article says, so yeah its fair.
Had they applied earlier it would have been more.
My main issue with it is that it's only the 2019 season... What happens in 2020? There is no way to tell if the court case will be over by round 5, 15, end of season etc so how do they compensate that? If he was cleared before round 5 would the replacement player be stood down or would we then be considered over the cap???

Excellent questions and ones I hope the club have raised with the NRL.

Fair, I don't think so.
It says like for like, so in reality we would have to spend 239k on someone this year ie: someone who is already playing 1st grade here or o/s, who is currently on say around 500k, maybe a little less, but will be able to increase them next year to what JDB would have been on in 2020.
So, this means:
1. Someone playing or can play lock
2. Is earning capacity this year is around 500k
3. Who is of representative quality
4. Who is probably out of favour at his current club
5. Who we would have to pay over 500k as salary next year.
6. Who would be ok with playing Dragons footy under McGregor.

The issue here is what happens if:
1. The case against JDB is dropped
2. The trial happens early in 2020 where he is cleared.
Do we keep that player etc?

The pro-rata payment is fair as it represents the funds remaining to be paid for this season. Next season the amount would be 550k.

The part that is unfair is that it would be very hard to attract a player for the rest of the season only and for that sum of money. This would be a unique circumstance applying to a player who just wants out of their current club or a player within our club who's contract ends this season.

SGI should have sorted this problem much earlier and been ready to act as soon as the court decision was announced.

I’ll do it.

And if JDB gets off, I’ll step down.

Can you give me a month to get my fitness up?

Not seeing how it’s fair ? De Belin hasn’t played at all this season

A complete lack of business sense or pragmatism on our part
The club should have realised exactly where this would end up and taken appropriate action from day 1
This is not a case of apportioning guilt, innocence, presumptions or anything else it is merely a case of how to be and more so act professional by removing the emotions.
IMO the club got far too close to all the media hype and missed the opportunity to get a result much earlier

For me nothing changes , until the boys club is broken up , outside influence comes in . The whole Club is in a shambles from the Leagues Club to the playing field .... It has to be one of the worst Leagues Clubs in Sydney .....
Going better than Souths LC.

If Saints applied earlier they would be getting more this year but they must have been so confident he would win they did not bother now they are in a huuuuuge mess. What a farce this season is becoming. JDB solicitor must be happy as they are the winners in all this as most of JDB salary which is paid by the Dragons goes to him and JDB gets nothing this season. He should have just stood down. He was advised poorly by the solicitors and both club and player cop this whilst the solicitor is laughing all the way to the bank.

Next season they will get the full $550k is what has been mentioned in the media. I thought JDB was on more than $550k, what a bargain for such a good player if he was available.

Yes - none of the parties involved in the case is coming out of this with much credit. While annoyed with De Belin's moral code in leaving behind a pregnant GF to chase skirt, it is not illegal and so he is guilty at this stage of stupidity and poor judgement only. However,I am angry with the NRL for imposing an unfair and retrospective sanction without consultation with the players union. I am also angry with the RPU for waiting until De Belin's case had been concluded and he had been effectively bankrupted before they decided to rattle the sabre and threaten their own legal action on the stand down clause. Meanwhile SGI seem to have adopted the three wise monkeys strategy and sucked up to Beattie and Greenberg by doing and saying nothing remotely controversial- now they are stuck with the impossible task of finding a quality replacement player for a short term indeterminate period.

This club deserves to fail- the St George Leagues Club under Danny Robinson is now effectively a giant casino when it used to be a leading entertainment outlet with a functioning auditorium and close links to the football club. It's officials and staff are arrogant in my dealings with them and take no notice of members concerns- a bit like the Board really.

Merrin remains
Despite reports linking Trent Merrin with a move back to the NRL, the Leeds Rhinos forward insists he's here to stay.

I caught up with the marquee player after Leeds beat London Broncos 24-22 on Sunday at Magic Weekend.

When asked about his future and a potential return to Australia, this is what he told me.

"I am here to stay," Merrin said. "I signed a four-year deal.

Trent Merrin insists he is staying with Leeds
"Obviously I've got personal things going on back home, but I'm here to stay and I want to get this club back to where they deserve to be."

Renewed speculation over his future began when Leeds granted Merrin compassionate leave last month following a family bereavement.

The rumours intensified after St George Illawarra were granted just over £130,000 in salary cap dispensation from the NRL to buy a replacement for the stood-down Jack de Belin.
