Salford Reds Boost Jamaican Rugby League

Rugby League continues to grow in Jamaica thanks to English assistance and Salford City Reds are the latest team to have positively impacted the young sport on the island nation.
When the University of the West Indies (UWI) played in their inaugural game on Thursday Feb 5, they donned the strips donated by Salford City Reds and Jamaican Rugby League Association Development Officer, Romeo Monteith was thrilled to see the team playing in the Reds’ strip:
“From the moment the boys saw the kit they were all smiles. None of these guys have played on authentic RL jerseys before and they were exceptionally happy to represent their university in the colours of the Reds,” said Monteith.
“The kit will also be used at the junior level as our aim is to outfit two U19 teams in Kingston”
Having encountered problems securing jerseys for the start of the tournament, the UWI were delighted with the donated kit and will proudly be showing off their new strip for some time.
Monteith continued:
“The connection with Salford is only just beginning and hopefully we will be able to forge a stronger partnership with the club over the coming months and help establish the Reds brand in a new and exciting market.
“We are delighted to have one of the UK Super League clubs assist with our growth and the promotion of the sport.”
Reds CEO David Tarry added:
“The world is becoming increasingly smaller due to new technologies like the internet, face book and twitter etc and it will be interesting to see how these potential new markets develop.
“The club is doing its bit to help with the game development in these areas, along with its work over recent years in the USA. The Jamaican administration team are very enthusiastic and deserve help, we will continue to explore options to promote the club the city and the wider game.
“We have also provided many team kits to many local organisations and schools in the Salford and Manchester areas as part of this initiative via our community team, this is one of our many commitments to grow the game and help our local community.”
