SALFORD Reds are trying to sign former Saints star Mark Edmondson who wants to play in Super League again next season after being released by the Sydney City Roosters.
Reds' football director Steve Simms today confirmed he has opened talks with Mark's agent Andy Clarke with a view to signing the big forward for next season.
Edmondson, has spent a year in the NRL after being snapped up by the Roosters following a series of impressive performances for Saints. It was an offer too good to refuse and the opportunity to play alongside his friend and GB team-mate Adrian Morley.
Simms told M.E.N. Sport: "I spoke with Andy Clarke to check out Mark's availability well before the Roosters announced he was being released at the end of this season.
"He's a tremendous forward and we are very keen to sign him, he has lots of pace and was excellent during his time at Saints.
"He will have benefited from playing in Australia, defensively he is sound, he runs very strongly and is a target for us."
Edmondson played club rugby union before breaking through at Saints and being given his chance by ex-Knowsley Road boss Ian Millward. Saints could again be in the reckoning for him along with Hull and Warrington.
But Edmondson wants to settle again in the North-West on his return and Reds will do everything they can to secure his signature.
Meanwhile, Andrew Dunemann will undergo a scan to find out the extent of the foot injury he sustained in the win over Bradford. Simon Finnegan will be out for a month with damaged knee ligaments and Karl Fitzpatrick is also sidelined. But new signing David Gower could be in the squad for tomorrow's clash with Hull.
Steve Simms has also spoken this week to the agent of Cronulla forward Hutch Maieva who has confirmed the player is keen to play Super League next season.
Warrington, who have major injury problems ahead of their weekend clash with Huddersfield, are again being linked with Australian star Andrew Johns.
Reports in Australia claim the Newcastle star will be targeted by the Wolves, where he had a guest spell at the end of last season.
Warrington have again also been linked with Saints' star Sean Long as they look to bolster their squad following the capture of GB forward Morley.
