Sam Burgess retires

Surely to medically retire someone, there has to be an insurance company signing off on it somewhere, either for the player or the club.

How he can be medically declared unfit to play the game again, and in 18 months be right to go is beyond me. The NRL should refuse to register any player who has been medically retired from ever playing NRL again.

Devils in the detail!
Was he retired because he couldn't fulfill his contract within a reasonable time frame rather than because he couldn't play ever again?
Did insurance pay for it or have Souths covered it in his off field employment?
Does the NRL even have a policy on it or do they just wing it each time a high profile player wants to be retired off by his club?

I've often thought there should be a medical waiver list for salary cap purposes and any player out of the game due to injury for more than 6 months can be put on medical waiver for a max 12 motnhs and his salary used to bring someone else in or to upgrade another players salary who steps up.

Burgess wasn't medically retired. He effectively forfeited his remaining years contract money by doing so. However in a remarkable co-incidence, he was hired for some desk job that would pay him the money he forfeited over a longer period of time.

Interesting take on things - if doctors said he would need to take 2 seasons out, but could return after that (in what would be final year of his contract), then how can it be medically retired? He could return within the duration of his contract, but is choosing not to.

Going back to this - he wasn’t officially ‘medically retired’, they just retired him because he was unavailable for a couple of years, so no insurance complications - but, if he is allowed back, you’d think it will have huge ramifications for how the salary cap is applied for injured players moving forward.
Souths, rather predictably have used this tactic to circumnavigate the salary cap hit for an injured player, exactly the same as what they did with Inglis - except that wasn’t an injury, that was for a lazy/unfit/out of form player. Essentially, Souths have been unable to get value for money from their 2 top earners (who happen to be older players), so have retired them off and made the salary cap saving. The fact both are coming back to play means either Souths should be penalised for the blatant rort, or the rules have to be clarified and changed so call teams can do the same. Watch those ballooned long term deals for older players become the norm....

One of the things I really looked forward and enjoyed was Sam Burgess retiring. A filthy blight on the game.
The only thing better for the game would be for Gould leave it entirely.

Now he wants to come back, no thanks

Sam was literally announced as Head Coach of our SG Ball side a couple of days ago. He's a first class sh*t stirrer and this place has gobbled the bait.

You can pretend mental health isn’t the same as an injury, you would be wrong however.

Ease up a minute CHAMP. As a Broncos supporter, shouldn't you be in the kitchen preparing that humble pie with that spoon of yours? This thread is specifically for the **alleged** cheating merkinry of the bunnies. If you want us all to pile more shit on your club create a thread but make sure you tell your supporter brethren not to be such sensitive sooks about it so it doesn't immediately get caved.

Firstly it’s THE CHAMP.
Second if you don’t think the bunnies are cheating you’re too dumb to follow rugby league.

Both players ‘injured’ and removed from Souths cap until fit enough to play again - not how it has worked for other clubs.

Sure thing cHAMp. Maybe I'm not so dumb to think that just about every side in the comp is also cheating the cap in some way. Clearly some are better at it than others but at least Souths have shoved it into the NRL's lap and the NRL has accepted it.
