Well Michael Schumacher failed to finish in the German Grand Prix but it has set him up for his 4th World Championship ina fortnights time. If Schumacher is the first accross the finish line in Hungary the Glory will be all his as Coulthard has blundered almost all his points opportunities.
Coulthard now sits in the position where he may end the year in 4th which would certainly send shock waves through the McLaren team. Ralf Schumacher and the Williams team keep powering on with Ralf just 6 points back of Coulthard and Williams just 10 points back of McLaren in the Constructors race.
On the Ferrari scene Barrichello raced well and now sits just 7 points back of Coulthard. With reliability on Ferraris side and the McLarens continuous problems Barrichello just keeps biding his time slowing edging up on Coulthard who mid just a month or so ago was a huge threat to the Drivers title.
The action heats up from here on in, McLaren are on the verge of total embarrassment, Ferrari on the verge of total domination and Williams on the verge of inner satisfaction that they are finally back at the top end of F1.
Short of a broken leg like in 99 (touch wood) Michael Schumacher has the title under his belt, he may not win in Hungary but its just a matter of time as the Williams gets in the way of Coulthard.
Next year is now the place to look. Williams have arrived on the scene with all guns blazing with that new powerful BMW engine roaring. They are the fastest car out there and if Michelin can lift their game next year Williams will be giving that title a major crack. Ralf Schumacher has come of age and shows no fear of his brother or the scarlet Ferrari, likewise the firey Montoya.
Ferrari once again will be the team to beat as Schmacher has entered a new phase of his career, he got the Ferrari drivers hoodoo off his back in 2000 and now is showing why he will go down as one of the best drivers in history. Barrichello plays his support role well and can show at times hes not the nice little push over his persona makes him out to be.
McLaren have a big mountain to climb, the McLaren can motor it alright, speed is no problem but mechanical reliability continues to bog them down. Hakkinen i believe will stay on and Coulthard will have gained alot of experience from this years title race where he has really taken on the lead role at McLaren. I still see them coming out on the bottom of a 3 horse race.
Toyota join us next year in what is going to be a mixed bag. In the Toyotas case its just wait and see. They have had a whole year to produce and develop the car, it may fail to live up to the hype like the Jaguar but this isn't a off season merger. I expect the Toyota to be extremly competitive and we could see a 4 manufactor race which would make it very interesting. Whoever said Formula one is a 2 manufactor battle obviously has no inkling of what the sport is about.
Cheers
