Sea Eagles set for Q Cup

12:00a.m. 31 May 2008
| By Jon Tuxworth

Wide Bay Rugby League president Danny McGuire sums up the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles’ case for entry into next year’s Queensland Cup with a simple analogy: “The pie’s been baked, it just needs to be taken out of the oven”.
The Queensland Rugby League board will meet on June 19 to discuss the Sea Eagles’ desire to secure a license into the state’s biggest competition.
And McGuire, himself a QRL board member, is highly confident the Sea Eagles have satisfied the criteria needed to be given the green light.
Facilities, playing staff and the ability to meet budget are the main criteria the club will need to meet to be granted its wish.
“It’s like a jigsaw puzzle. You’ve got the players, the facilities, the money, the background, the administration... all the parts are there,” McGuire said.
“There’s no way the QRL will be against it happening, provided they meet those criteria.
“Now those criteria are met, I can’t see any reason why we can’t get a tick in the box.
“The QRL are probably a bit cautious in saying yes because of teams coming and going over the years, but the Sea Eagles have had three years to iron out the bugs.”
With around $500,000 needed to make Queensland Cup entry viable, McGuire estimates the Sea Eagles have that covered, with more to spare.
“I think they’ve got sponsorship equivalent to about $700,000,” McGuire said.
That figure includes coach’s wages provided by NRL affiliate club Manly, its agreement with Stockland Park and internal sponsorship.
Manly will also provide around six or seven players from its squad each week that fail to be selected for the NRL.
“The QRL recognises the need for a strong local competition in this area, because the Sunshine Coast is developing so rapidly and there’s a lot of pressure from other sports,” McGuire said.
“It’s part of the QRL strategy to get a Q Cup team here.”
McGuire added the influx of playing talent from Brookvale, as well as the “come home” factor, would ensure player quality wasn’t a factor.
“We’ve got about a dozen players who come from Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast who have indicated they want to come back here and play in the Q Cup,” he said.
“It’s not as if we won’t have the players, they’ll be there.”
McGuire said a local Queensland Cup presence was critical to ensure young talent doesn’t have to travel to Brisbane to further its games.
“We’ve currently got players here on the Coast who go to school here, but have to play in Brisbane in an under-18 competition,” he said.
“How ridiculous is that?”

Interesting stuff here. Manly are certainly hedging their bets in NSW's tight market. A smart move imo. Firstly they get access to part of the SE QLD region in an area largely untapped at this point. It is probably quite a surprise to many non-Manly fans to hear that Manly has a very strong following in QLD. Over the last few seasons the Brisbane match has seen a huge supporter base turn up. Last year was unbelievable. This year was quite huge too. It's come a long way since the dark old days of the NE and only a small following.

2009- Sunny Coast Eagles
2010- WA Reds

Two more teams to beat us!

Will be interesting to see how many games Manly take to Caloundra...

I give it half a dozen years before we're up there is full time if something drastic doesn't happen.

There is no way in the world the Sunshine Coast should enter the Qld Cup. Their performances in reserve grade and colts have been disgraceful.

And they would spend more money on new players too. Like Mackay Cairns etc. The QLD Cup really is a statewide comp isn't it. Teams in a lot of different places. Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba are two places that need teams

They got rid of Toowoomba because of the Broncos withdrawing their support and there is no point adding teams willy nilly when they are only going to struggle and get smashed every week. They have only just got enough money to enter the Qld Cup so they are hardly going to attract Manly players, even the ones who can't crack first grade.

broncos relocated away from toowoomba because of costs associated with travel. Now it's a more financial and viable feeder club at Aspley.
Manly are a very smart footy club and have been working on this move for years. They will play some fringe first graders, young up and comers, and the rest will hopefully come from the very strong sunshine coast area.

Young up and comers- Under 20's comp
The Sunshine Coast area isn't very strong. Take a look at where they are coming in A Grade and Colts. Last and Last and most of the players are from up that way. Aspley only play in colts and A Grade. Bronco's main affiliation is with Norths and only Joel Moon has played for both Norths and the Broncos.

It's more of a Souths-Logan situation. They seem to be running 4 or 5 raiders contracted players a weekend...and look at how well they're travelling.

Except Souths are an established club in the Qld Cup whereas the Sunny Coast are not. It's not like the Titans joining the NRL and them having 3.25 million to spend as a salary cap.

Souths are kept alive by the Raiders. Have been for a while now. Their systems were gutted out ages ago and it's essentially an entirely new club as of 2008.

That's the same situation as the SC Sea Eagles. Manly will make this work because it's our long term contingency plan.

Yeh, just like Manly's involvement with Wynnum Manly worked. Didn't even last one season :lol:
