Pain barrier won't stop Jack's big night

John Greco

09Aug07

BARNSTORMING Manly interchange forward Jack Afamasaga is willing to ``play in pain'' in the lead up to the finals to ensure he keeps his place in the high-flying Sea Eagles squad.

The strong-running back-rower has been named in the Manly side to play Newcastle in Gosford tomorrow night.

The former Eel was picked despite sustaining a painful rib cartilage injury in the win over the Broncos last Sunday.

The 23-year-old didn't return in the second half at Suncorp Stadium, playing a total of just 19 minutes in the 21-8 win.

Afamasaga has only participated in light training this week but declared himself a certain starter for the Bluetongue Stadium clash against the Knights.

``I can't afford to miss any games this close to the finals,'' he said after training at the Sydney Sports Academy in Narrabeen.

``If I rest a week that could mean my spot, so I will just pad it up, take a few pain killers and play with the pain.

``I love playing with the boys, the atmosphere's good so at the moment I want to be a part of it.''

The gutsy forward, who has a year to run on his contract at the Sea Eagles, has been a consistent performer in the absence of injured prop Jason King.

Asked if he was worried about losing his spot in the 17 with King, Travis Burns and Steve Matai due to return in coming weeks, Afamasaga said:

``I have thought about that but all I can do is concentrate on week to week. I will just try to perform every game I play and see what happens. I feel I can do a bit more but it depends on the game time I get.''

Meanwhile, Manly prop Brent Kite admits he could do with a break ahead of next month's finals series.

Kite has not missed a game this year, playing 18 NRL clashes, three Origin games for NSW and a Test match for Australia.

``This is my biggest workload ... I'm a little bit older and I'm starting to feel it a little bit,'' he said.

``It's the first time I've felt the body, sort of the creeps in the old joints./We have Jason King out and it may be something we look at once Kingy is back on board.''

Didn't watch it. Was at work.

Not gonna bite, if that's what you're hoping. Not quite as easily provoked as you are.
