Less than a week after Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said that defensive coordinator Sean McDermott would return in 2011, the Eagles have fired McDermott, according to sources.

McDermott, 36, came under heavy criticism in a season in which the Eagles allowed a franchise-high 31 touchdown passes and had the worst red-zone defense in the NFL. However, Reid said in a season-ending news conference McDermott would be retained.

Within three days of that declaration, sources say Reid informed McDermott he had changed his mind and would relieve McDermott of his duties after two years as the team's defensive coordinator.

McDermott replaced the legendary Jim Johnson, who died of cancer in 2009. He adapted Johnson's aggressive style of defense but injuries to key veterans forced McDermott to adjust his scheme in 2010. The Eagles allowed at least 24 points in 11 games this season.

The Eagles have not made a public announcement regarding McDermott's departure in hopes of allowing him to find another job.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported in October McDermott's authority as defensive coordinator was in jeopardy.

It had to happen really.

Reid doesn't fire people but our lack of defensive presence was too much to let slide. He was given a chance to step out of his mentors shadow and really didn't cut it with the patterns he ran or his effective use of cattle

JJ would be rolling in his grave knowing what McDermott has done to his formerly elite D. Good move from the eagles.

Now go out and get a proven defensive winner

id love for the eagles to interview the LB coach for the steelers Keith Butler. He's done a tremendous job there, might be ready to make the step up

It's only a good move if we replace him with someone better. I can clearly see WHY it happened but I'm just not sure who is available as a replacement.

Have read he had a clause put in his contract saying he can't interview in exchange for being Dick LeBeau's successor, this was after he turned down the Miami job last year.

No point bringing in a 3-4 guy anyway.

Good move to get rid of him, but comparing anyone to JJ is pretty tough, that guy was special, his defenses were so much fun to watch, so aggressive

As recently fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has emerged as a candidate for the same position with the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers, the Eagles are in discussions with a number of candidates, including former Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons coach Jim L. Mora as McDermott's replacement, a source said.

The Eagles also discussed Rob Ryan as a potential defensive coordinator but he is set to join the Dallas Cowboys.
Aside from Mora, current Eagles assistant Dick Jauron is a candidate to replace McDermott. Jauron was given permission by the Eagles to interview for the Cleveland Browns' defensive coordinator vacancy, which was held by Ryan. Former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Billy Davis, who was recently let go, also is on the Eagles' list of candidates.

When McDermott was informed of his surprising dismissal just days after getting a vote of confidence, coach Andy Reid told the 36-year-old that the specter of filling the legendary shoes of Jim Johnson in a sports-heavy city such as Philadelphia was a contributing factor.

Mora is f**ken terrible, he was the DC in SF for a number of years, runs a bend but dont break defense that breaks.

Trust me, he's not very good nor imaginative, I remember a game against the Bills where we were struggling and CB Ahmad Plummer suggested to him that we change to a cover 2 due to what the offense was doing, they made the change and 4 INTs later won the game.

A bit of a worry when your DC can't make that analysis

I agree, but does this really warrant a new thread?

Surely we're not gonna start new threads for assistant coach hires, might be a bit much
