Season Review Thoughts.

What’s everyone thoughts on the season rounds 1-25?

Personally I am astounded at the improvement. We’ve rarely played what I think is our best for a whole game but it’s still been enough to win week in and week out.

Massive achievement to lose only 6 games in a season and finish second.

If you’d told me we’d finish 6-8 this year at the start of the season I’d have taken it straight away.

Also have to remember the massive injury toll this year and a few suspensions, yet we kept on winning.

Brisbane and Canberra losses in Brisbane were the low point, although in hindsight knowing the team had that f**ked flu going around for the Brisbane game makes the result understandable.

Club kicking goals on and off the field, great players who are good people makes it so easy to be a Sharks fan this year.

Not sure how the finals turn out, injuries coming late in the season may disrupt our fitness and combinations…. If we win one final game and make a prelim I’ll give the finals a pass mark. I think on our day we can go all the way if the ball bounces right.

Overall the improvement has been massive. And can only give full credit to the coach, but the boys all bought in as well which has been wonderful to see.

To build a strong season a side has to win 80%+ at home and have a strong enough defence to win a good number on the road.

Only 1 loss at Shark Park is a tick. Third best defence (points conceded) and better than Melbourne and Easts is another tick.

One of the knocks on Sharks teams in the past few seasons has been an inability to beat strong sides. Wins against Cows, Eels, Souths, Storm and a clean sweep of St George and Manly are very pleasing.

In terms of individual player development, virtually everyone had improved. Talakai became an origin player, Hynes established himself as a quality half, Moyza resurrected his career, BB has played every game.

As a squad they have developed a style of play that is good to watch using the skills of the players. The players seem tight with no dramas getting into the press.

Commercially, the club appears to be strong with all sponsors coming back. Getting the club complete will add more revenue streams. Biggest concern will then be ground upgrades.

Overall, 2022 has been a tremendous success.

I read somewhere that since round 12 we have been actually the best defensive team.

I am surprised we finished as high as second, like others I thought 6th to 8th earlier in the season. We recruited extremely well, managed to cover for injured players extremely wel, every replacement player seems to fit in with the plays and structures and I've been very impressed with our defence structures and attitude.

The funny thing is, I'm extremely happy with this season - but I also don't think the team has put together a full 80 minutes.

Nor did we ever have a full strength team through out the season. Not once. Always had a player here or there out.

I know others did too but really showed that next man up mentality.

The appointment of Craig Fitzgibbon has been a stunning success. I love John Morris, but he was never going to get us to this level of success.

I was also prepared to say that we are way off the pace in terms of the Premiership race, however, I have changed my mind after watching the Fitzgibbon press conference yesterday - he knows!

He knows that Semi-Final football is a new level, so with that, I am confident that we will be in a Prelim Final - any prediction outside of that would be foolish based on the current performance of officiating - Referees, Touch Judges and Bunker.

Just parroting the above really, but it's been a huge huge improvement.. I think most of this has been coming for a few years in any case, all those young guys are 50 games plus now and hitting their early primes, signings were good, shed some big contracts and did incredible work on re-signings into the next few years which is great for morale. But I think the biggest on field success has been the improvement of the couple of potential white elephants who ended up kicking on... Getting good performances out of Moylan, Fifita and Graham seemed impossible last year.. even Hynes as a starting 7 was a gamble, but all of them came through.

And yeah agree with Frailty! Haven't had a full performance yet.. error rate is terrible and we still fall into clunkiness at times, but the defensive improvement has shielded us from all of that.

Second on the ladder is a huge over achievement... and look, I don't think we're the second best team in the finals. I know you get the draw you're given, but f**ken hell did we have the best draw of the comp... All bottom sides played twice, top sides played all in a row during origin period. Wildly good luck.

I'm worried about the finals, but reckon we can knock off the cows.. every other side in the finals has our measure imo, so will need to find that full 80 to go all the way.. not impossible tho

The thread is premature. Reviews should happen when you're finished competing

I'll write after October 2nd :)
