The Game Set restart rule changed for 2022 season

Following consultation with all 16 clubs, the RLPA and stakeholders within the game, The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has approved one rule change for the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership season. The Commission has also approved game day policy amendments.

The rule change is as follows:

Penalties will be awarded instead of set restarts (six again) for ruck or 10m infringements inside the 40m zone of the team in possession. This will provide an additional deterrence to defending teams who are willing to concede set restarts to gain a tactical advantage. It will also provide more opportunities for teams receiving the penalty to attack from a better field position.

Game Day Policy Amendments

Team List Announcements - To complement the addition of the 18th player rule introduced last season, team announcements on Tuesday will proportionately increase from 21 to 22 players.

Free Interchange - A free interchange will only be granted in instances of foul play where the offending player is sin binned or sent-off. A free interchange will no longer apply when players are placed on report.

Injury Stoppages - With the exception of head injuries, only a referee, touch judge or The Bunker will be permitted to stop play for an injury. Trainers will retain the ability to stop play where a head injury has occurred. Medical trainers will continue to have unlimited access to the field at any time to treat an injured player.

What helps any sport popular is to have simple rules. So that new people watching understand what is happening.
This is why union is unpopular... Nobody understands the ruck/maul rules.

Not a fan of this. I get the cynical set restart thing, but use the sin bin for repeated infringements. The whole point of the set restart was to keep the ball in play longer.

Sensible. It's needed with covid and injuries during training etc

Don't like it. If a player is injured from foul play then it should be a free interchange regardless of the severity of the foul play.

This is a tricky one. Refs should always be the only ones who can stop the game. The problem is there is nobody specifically watching for an injury and can immediately assess the severity of the injury or how it will effect current play. Personally I think play should be stopped any time there is an injury, but there needs to be rules in place to prevent clubs from rorting it ie; player that just got interchanged cannot go back onto the field for a minimum of 10 minutes.

We can't really have that with league unless we forbad coaches or made a rule that coaches have to have a proper day job outside of NRL. The coaches spend most of their time coming up with ways to cheat the rules.

It's the cycle of rules: Coaches take advantage of the rules, and the NRL reacts until another savy coach comes along.
As an example, the Bulldogs in the 80s are the reason we have a 20m restart from a ball caught in goal

that is what makes it a disaster that there is so little coaching depth. There are no good places to become a coach except within the 16 NRL clubs. So there's just the 16 head coaches and their disciples and most of the 16 head coaches are disciples or from the coaching tree of 2 or 3 coaches. The situation with coaching in the NRL is fixable with some kind of academy or something but I don't see them doing it.

Only way to stop rorting the injuries is a bigger bench and replacement, not interchange.

The NRL is the most farcical organisation.

Let’s start with the six again rule . There was no neeed to make this change or announcement if Only the refs & NRL followed their own rules or grandstanding announcements in first place .
- when 6 again introduced , refs had discretion fo use penalty instead of 6 again … did not happen . After a few rounds or mid season when introduced warning by NRL for deliberate or early discretions would result sin bin/penalties .. again did not occur .

injury stoppages , the clowns change this on ash of basis whenever , so when next player is injured in round 1 or 2 and then happens to be “serious “ there will br outcry and NRL change tune

Good changes.

Now it's time to turn our attention to the Melbourne Storm and their wrestling tactics.
