Well then you havent been following the game for that long. The Ashes has massive meaning. Hell I knew of the RL Ashes before I heard of Crickets.

I'm only 22 so i haven't been following the game that long (especially International league which was mostly dead when i was growing up).

What exactly does the ashes mean in league? I understand in cricket it's because of some burnt stumps or something but why do we have it?

We basically just stole the name from cricket, but thats not anything really new in sport. Its only a problem here because supporters of various codes just cant get along.

Its important because it was the only real competitive international series of Rugby League. It was the best from Australia vs the best of Great Britain. Eventually France and New Zealand became more competitive, but by then the tradition of Ashes tours was ingrained into our game. It was the ultimate goal of Australian players to represent the Kangaroos on a tour of Britain.

Iv never been to an Ashes test match, but I understand why its important.

Im excited to see how the Atlantic Cup goes this week to see how strong the 'Rest of the World' really is...WOuld be great to see this continue and expand with other American (nth & sth) countries and South Africa join the group.

Ideally, they could get to a level where they have a qualification spot into the world cup.
