Here's hoping Shane Blackett can enjoy an injury free season and show what he is capable off. The whole concept of the Under 20's with the reserves (as in NSW Cup) relegated almost to also ran status conspires against promising young forwards. Very, very few promising young front rowers ever really hit there straps on make there mark in the top grade until the age of 23.
In my opinion the Jersey Flegg Under 19's should have been retained and the Toyota Cup should have been an under 21 competition with dispensation to include a number of over age players to accomodate developing forwards to ensure they are not lost from the game at such as young age.
I recognise the current financial issues no longer make my suggestions financially viable but I am in no doubt it is to the overall detriment to the game.
I believed the way forward should have been for the second tier competition to be the NSW Cup. They should have made it Under 23's but to allow a certain number of over age players from the NRL top 25 squad to play, a maximum of six for example. I enjoyed the Toyota Cup last season, dont get me wrong but I would prefer to watch the player's from the NRL squad in the game prior to the main fixture in the lead up game to the main game in a side which would still be largely made up of young junior talent. Let's face it, the Toyota Cup will have 300 or so youngsters running around this season and it will be enjoyable to watch but to many are lost to the game at too young an age. Jamie Theoharus and Brendon Hlad are two cases in point. They like many other youngsters deserved better. I am not saying they would necessarily have made the NRL but with a better system should have been given the opportunity.
