Sharapova's grunting

Why does she do it? I don't know if it's intentional but it does seem against the spirit of the game as it can distract the opponent and mask the sound of her racquet hitting the ball, which is important to hear as a player.

Everyone else can hit the ball hard without the vocals so why does she do it? It's so bloody ennoying.

Why is it something that only occurs in tennis in general? Bowlers in cricket put their bodies under immense strain all the time and you never hear that kind of thing.

she let down soviet russia with such a poor display although i think she was also the victim of discrimination by the anti soviet lines people who ruled out perfectly in balls from comrade sharapova.

There was definately an anti soviet bias in this tournament from the crowd to the linespersons to umpires and media and commentators.

They do not want soviet's to show them up especially the criminal americano's

My two cents:
I know in taekwondo that the shout (technically called a kiap) is done at the same time as the kick really as a way to focus the energy and you do feel that you kick harder.
So maybe the same applies to Sharapova, and if that's the thing she does to make her feel more confident, then fine. I don't think its a distraction at all — once you're "in the zone" nothing should disturb your focus.

By the way, if we're talking hot tennis players, you absolutely can not go past Daniella Hantuchova.
Watching the match between her and Sharapova was like watching soft porn.

Meh....sometimes i think she doesnt mean to grunt loud...other times i think she does it to put her opponents off.
Also sometimes, not very often you hear bowlers in cricket grunt...but not the way she does lol.

Bowling in cricket is a different movement though.... Not a single explosive point of contact but a long movement.

Its like how boxers grunt/breathe out quickly with every punch they throw. Her grunting seems over the top but its working for her.
